Chelsea forward Fran Kirby has won the PFA Vertu Motors WSL Fans’ Player of the Month award for September following a sensational start to the 2021/22 season.
Kirby took 26% of the over vote, finishing ahead of Arsenal star Beth Mead, who was second. Arsenal’s Vivianne Miedema and Tottenham’s Shelina Zadorsky came joint third in the fan vote, while Gunners pair Leah Williamson and Kim Little were also included on the final shortlist.
Following a summer at the Olympics for Great Britain, Kirby didn’t actually start in Chelsea’s opening game of the season in a surprise defeat by title rivals Arsenal. But she more than made up for that in the remainder of Chelsea’s WSL games in September.
The 26-year-old was instrumental as the champions scored 10 goals in successive wins over Everton and Manchester United, both of whom are trying to challenge the big clubs this season.
Kirby scored the opening goal in both games, while she also got two assists against the latter.
Overall, the England international made 12 chances in the WSL in September, making her the league’s most creative player by some distance during the month.
Kirby, whose career was threatened by a heart condition during the 2019/20 campaign, has been back to her best since the start of last season.
“Fran is so driven, ambitious and competitive, she comes in every day with the desire to keep getting better. I think she can have another great season and a great Euros,” Chelsea boss Emma Hayes said at the start of September, referring to Euro 2022 on home soil in the summer.
