The final batch of Premier League fixtures this calendar year are spread across the capital on Sunday afternoon.

Arsenal won the last top-flight game of 2022 and also close out this year. North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur played the first game of 2023 but plenty has changed since a side managed by Antonio Conte and captained by Hugo Lloris slumped to a 2-0 defeat.

Here's everything you need to know about the last Premier League matches before 2024 begins.

  • Location: London, England
  • Stadium: Craven Cottage
  • Date: Sunday 31 December
  • Kick-off: 14:00 GMT / 09:00 ET / 06:00 PT
  • Referee: Peter Bankes
  • VAR: Paul Tierney

It's easy to paint Mikel Arteta as the ultimate critic of Premier League referees. The Arsenal boss may have been cleared of misconduct but he was brought in front of a disciplinary panel in the first place for his scathing tirade against the man in the middle, writing off the officiating in Arsenal's defeat to Newcastle United as "a disgrace", "embarrassing" and "not acceptable".

However, Marco Silva is never quick to compliment the game's officials. Fulham's 2-2 draw with the Gunners in August sparked one of Silva's several rants this season. Labelling the decision to dismiss Calvin Bassey as "a joke", Silva fumed: "They are taking all the emotion from the game because it's going to protect the big clubs! No one listens to us."

Sunday's on-pitch official Peter Bankes has incited the ire of Silva in the past. "Our second half was bad," the Fulham manager sighed after a 1-1 Championship draw against Blackpool last year, "but the second half from the ref was really bad."

Silva added: "It was not a big decision, it was many, many, many small decisions. When there are ten, 20 of them, it's difficult to understand."

Hopefully for all involved, the referee stays out of the spotlight on Sunday.

Tottenham vs Bournemouth

  • Location: London, England
  • Stadium: Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
  • Date: Sunday 31 December
  • Kick-off: 14:00 GMT / 09:00 ET / 06:00 PT
  • Referee: Simon Hooper
  • VAR: David Coote

"We've got our Tottenham back" was the chant that rang around the Vitality Stadium when Bournemouth hosted the Londoners in August.

Ange Postecoglou would very much like some of the players that featured in that 2-0 victory back. James Maddison was particularly impressive on the south coast. The ephemeral playmaker scored his first goal for Spurs and even won over a few Bournemouth fans with some tomfoolery by the corner flag. Unfortunately for Postecoglou, Maddison isn't expected to be available until the new year.

Dominic Solanke is enjoying the form of his top-flight career at Bournemouth but, if the gossip columns are anything to go by, he could end next month lining up for Spurs.
