The Netherlands squad has been struck by an outbreak of flu ahead of their World Cup last 16 clash with the United States on Saturday.

The Dutch won Group A at a canter to set up a fixture with the USA, but on Friday manager Louis van Gaal revealed a number of his players are struggling with flu symptoms.

Dutch outlet AD report midfielders Frenkie de Jong and Marten de Roon are among those who have been affected by 'colds and sore throats'.

Former Manchester United boss Van Gaal remained coy when asked about the impact on his squad, stating: "We are not going to elaborate on that. But if it goes around in the group, it is worrying."

Asked about player availability, he added: "There are not fifteen or so. In principle, everyone is fit and available."

The Netherlands squad did not train as usual on Friday - perhaps as a ploy not to spread any illness further - with Van Gaal revealing he gave his players the day off.

"I gave them a day of rest. With this group, they communicate that to me. I listen to my players."

The Dutch take on an energetic US side on Saturday. Gregg Berhalter's team beat Iran on the final matchday of Group B to finish second, setting up the clash at the Khalifa International Stadium.
