Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood could leave the club on deadline day, 90min understands, with a permanent departure on a free transfer an increasing possibility.

Greenwood has not featured for United since January 2022, following charges of rape and assault against him and a resulting suspension by the club. All charges against Greenwood were dropped in February amid the withdrawal of key witnesses, new evidence coming to light and prosecutors conceding a realistic prospect of conviction.

United opened their own internal investigation into the case in the months following and last month, after initially attempting to find a route back into the playing squad for Greenwood, announced officially that it had been "mutually agreed" that the most appropriate option was for the 21-year-old to continue his career away from Old Trafford.

The club also confirmed they will "work with Mason to achieve that outcome" and work is underway on making that happen. The player's representatives are in talks with a number of clubs and 90min understands United are prepared to sanction a loan exit, but a free transfer on a permanent basis is also becoming an increasing possibility.

United are understood to have informed Greenwood's camp that they were considering letting the player leave for nothing on Friday morning, to help facilitate his departure.

It's understood that Greenwood does not want to leave Europe, and there is interest in him from clubs in Spain, Italy and Turkey. The transfer deadlines in Spain and Italy are later on Friday, though the deadline in Turkey is not until September 15.

The urgency of work on a transfer out in recent days suggests a transfer could be completed before a Friday deadline, with Lazio in talks over signing the player. Atalanta have also held talks with United in recent weeks over a potential loan and they have recently let forward Duvan Zapata join Torino.

La Liga club Sevilla are at risk of losing Youssef En-Nesyri on deadline day and may become active in the running if the Moroccan's departure accelerates.

Super Lig club Besiktas are another potential landing spot and any transfer to Turkey will have more time for completion given the extended deadline.
