At kick-off, all the eyes of a 57,000-strong crowd at Old Trafford were drawn towards a player that didn't feature in Manchester United's breezy 3-1 victory over RC Lens in a pre-season friendly on Saturday.

Rasmus Hojlund was presented on the pitch at the Theatre of Dreams after the completion of his £72m move.

The players that Erik ten Hag did select quickly turned the focus away from the exciting young Danish striker but not before Lens frontman Florian Sotoca briefly filled the spotlight.

Halfway through the opening 45 minutes which United largely controlled, Sotoca collected a stray pass in the centre circle, not even pausing for a touch to steady himself before unleashing an audacious drive.

Andre Onana began to back-pedal before twisting into a full-speed sprint but couldn't get a glove to Sotoca's wonder strike.

Marcus Rashford fired the hosts level within three minutes of the interval as United hurriedly sought to translate their dominance onto the scoreboard. United's number ten kick-started a slick move through the thirds which Antony finished off before Casemiro concluded the scoring at a set piece inside an hour.

Here are the best and worst performers from United's penultimate friendly as Hojlund watched on from the stands.

Man Utd's best player vs Lens

Alejandro Garnacho - 8/10

Alejandro Garnacho put Jonathan Gradit through so much torment that an hour had not even elapsed before the Lens defender resorted to cynical bodychecks. There was little hope of catching Garnacho's twinkling toes so Gradit landed a forearm in his throat.

The enigmatic teenager strictly runs to goal as the crow flies, dispensing with any unnecessary bobbing and weaving.

Ten Hag only made two substitutions - he fielded a strong XI which will likely bear a close resemblance to the side that starts against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday - taking off Garnacho after an hour. The winger - who may make way if Hojlund is fielded through the middle and Rashford moves onto his favoured left flank - was treated to a standing ovation from an Old Trafford crowd.

Honourable mention

Bruno Fernandes - 8/10

There were many contenders for the role of honourable mention; both Rashford and Antony provided a goal and an assist while Casemiro was as impenetrable as ever. But Manchester United’s new captain strolled around Old Trafford with an unrivalled regal air.

Spraying the ball from one flank to the other, Fernandes executed audacious passes that few players could see, let alone complete.

Man Utd's worst player vs Lens

Diogo Dalot - 3/10

Getting lobbed from 45 yards on your maiden appearance at Old Trafford is hardly an encouraging start for a goalkeeper that prides himself on his proactive stance. However, Onana was scarcely the primary cause of Sotoca's opener.

Diogo Dalot had been uncertain in possession before thrusting a leaden foot through the ball. Raphael Varane was barely ten yards to his left but had little chance of reaching Dalot's stray pass which Sotoca took full advantage of.

While the physically imposing full-back clawed back some credit with a flurry of defensive clearances at the back post, Dalot's unease on the ball stymied United's considered buildup throughout.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka was a particularly keen spectator from the sidelines.

Dishonourable mention

Mason Mount - 4/10

Mount could not stop an embarrassed grin creeping across his face. Looking around in a fog of shock, the £55m summer arrival was not alone in struggling to comprehend how he had failed to connect entirely with Garnacho's first-half cutback.

Ten Hag will have been encouraged by Mount's burning endeavour off the ball, leading the first wave of midfield pressure for a team that their manager has touted as "the best transitional side in the world". However, his contribution at the sharp end of the pitch left plenty to be desired on Saturday.
