Jan Vertonghen Says Family Are OK After Armed Robbery on Home

Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen says he and his family are OK after his home was robbed on Tuesday evening.

The Belgian was in Germany on ​Champions League duty on Tuesday when his wife Sophie de Vries and their two children were subjected to a terrifying ordeal. Four men wielding machetes are reported by police to have broken into the London home and stolen a number of items. ​

It was evidently a major shock for De Vries and her two young children, but the vigilant Vertonghen says everything is fine now the situation has blown over. 

“I’m OK. Obviously it’s a big shock for everyone," he said per the Sun. “The family are in shock but OK. It is what it is.”

The 32-year-old did not confirm what was stolen, but a source at the time it was first reported noted that it was mainly electrical goods.

Fortunately no-one was injured during the robbery, but a police statement confirmed no arrests have been made as yet.

“Police were called to a residential address on March 10 to report a burglary," the statement reads.

“It was reported four men wearing balaclavas, armed with knives, had forced entry and stolen a number of items before leaving.

“Nobody was injured. There have been no arrests made and our inquiries continue.”

A Spurs statement on the matter urged anyone with any further information to come forward and help police with their investigation.

“We have been supporting Jan and his family through this terribly traumatic time and we encourage anyone who has any information to come forward to help the police with their investigation," the statement reads. 

Vertonghen is ​expected to leave Tottenham in the summer, with his contract unlikely to be renewed for another season.

​Tottenham crashed out of the Champions League with a ​3-0 defeat to RB Leipzig in Germany, though it remains to be seen if that will count for much, with the growing prospect of UEFA competitions being scrapped until after the summer due to the COVID-19 epidemic.
