Manchester City's defence of their maiden Champions League title began with a faultless group-stage campaign.

Pep Guardiola's reigning European champions won all six matches to top Group G ahead of German side RB Leipzig.

The Bundesliga club were thrashed 7-0 by City in last season's round of 16 and lost home and away to their familiar foes yet again. Nevertheless, Leipzig comfortably finished ahead of third-placed Young Boys, while winless Serbian champions Red Star propped up the standings.

Who has reached the 2023/24 Champions League last 16 from Group G?

Manchester City may have become just the second English club to ever win all half-dozen Champions League group-stage games, but it was not a first phase without its blemishes.

Guardiola's side conceded in five of their six games, recording as many clean sheets as city rivals Manchester United (one) who finished bottom of Group A. City kept a competition-high eight shut-outs en route to last season's European title.

  • PSV Eindhoven (Group B)
  • Napoli (Group C)
  • Inter (Group D)
  • Lazio (Group E)
  • Paris Saint-Germain (Group F)
  • Porto (Group H)

RB Leipzig - Group G runners-up

At half-time of Leipzig's trip to the Etihad in November, Marco Rose's side led City 2-0. "I told the guys that we made them angry in the first half," the Leipzig boss admitted after watching the reigning champions complete a comeback to win 3-2, "and that's what we saw in the second half."

Leipzig fulfilled pre-competition expectations by winning all four group games that weren't against Manchester City.

Young Boys - Europa League knockout round play-off

It was immediately apparent that Young Boys and Red Star would be battling it out for third place in this top-heavy Group G - at times that inferiority complex was too readily apparent, such as when captain Mohamed Ali Camara swapped shirts with City's Erling Haaland at half-time of a group game in November.

Nevertheless, the Swiss champions kept their heads (and shirts) for the all-important head-to-heads with Red Star, taking four points to secure a Europa League berth.

Red Star - Out of Europe

For the first time since 1968, when it was a straight knockout format under the guise of the European Cup, Red Star failed to win a single match in the continent's premier club competition.

The 1991 European champions took the lead at the home of current holders Manchester City in September but did not have the defensive resolve to maintain their advantage - only one club conceded more group-stage goals than Red Star this season.
