Well, it was nice while it lasted.

The mood around Manchester United was one of cautious optimism heading into Saturday's clash with Nottingham Forest. The recent comeback victory over Aston Villa felt like a turning point - evidence that this side was capable of the spectacular under Erik ten Hag.

The Forest game was spectacular in its own right... just for all the wrong reasons.

The first half made for tough watching. Forest started brightest and kept United at arm's length with ease, with the Red Devils struggling to even get shots away.

32 minutes in and Aaron Wan-Bissaka provided the tamest shot on target imaginable, and yet it was still the highlight of a first half which felt like both sides were playing FIFA against the younger cousin your parents ask you take it easy on.

Shortly after the hour mark, Forest took a deserved lead.

Gonzalo Montiel strolled forwards and cut the ball back to Nicolas Dominguez, who could hardly believe how open he was in the penalty area before sweeping beyond the helpless Andre Onana.

It always felt like United were going to need some help to get back into this game, and that's exactly how it worked out.

Forest goalkeeper Matt Turner's kicking had been awful all night and culminated with a shocking pass which gifted United possession. Alejandro Garnacho squared for Marcus Rashford, who curled the ball into the bottom corner to tie things up.

Four minutes later, however, the fun was over.

Morgan Gibbs-White strolled towards the edge of the penalty area, seemingly creating his own forcefield which propelled all United defenders away from him before firing into the back of the net.

Few could have any complaints about the result. While United did have more possession and more shots, they were simply awful going forwards.

The verdict was unanimous. Time for Ten Hag to go.
