WSL roundup - gameweek 7

The Premier League may be on a break but there was a full contingent of WSL fixtures for us to enjoy this weekend.

The headline game saw Chelsea secure a dominant victory over Man City, but there was also a North London Derby and an intriguing encounter between Man Utd and big-spending Everton.

Here is a summary of all the action...

Man City 0-4 Chelsea

Chelsea’s statement 4-0 win over Manchester City was the standout result in the WSL on Women’s Football Weekend, piling even more pressure on City boss Gareth Taylor.

Jessie Fleming and Sam Kerr scored at the beginning and end of the first half respectively to give the reigning champions a 2-0 lead that actually flattered them.

City had been the better side in the opening 45 minutes, but collapsed after the break as further Chelsea goals from Fran Kirby and Magdalena Eriksson took the game away from them. That meant a third home WSL defeat of the season and another thrashing at the hands of a rival.

Tottenham 1-1 Arsenal

A day earlier on Saturday, Arsenal dropped their first WSL points of the season when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Tottenham in the north London derby.

The Gunners trailed for the first time in the WSL this season and conceded their first domestic goal since the opening weekend when Rachel Williams bundled home the opening goal for Spurs.

Yet Vivianne Miedema popped up with a stoppage time header to prevent Arsenal losing against their rivals for the first time ever.

Everton 1-1 Man Utd

Manchester United registered a 1-1 draw for the second week in a row after being pegged back late on by Everton in their clash at Walton Hall Park.

United dominated the first half and were well worth their early lead through a fine goal from in-form Ella Toone, but Everton were much improved after the interval and substitute Simone Magill capitalised on defensive hesitancy to poke an equaliser into the net.

Birmingham 0-1 Aston Villa

Aston Villa edged the second city derby against Birmingham. Villa were the dominant side for the most part, although it didn’t translate into many chances, and it was a header from former England international Anita Asante that made the difference.

Birmingham did threaten more as the game went on but their wait for a WSL win continues.

Brighton 1-0 Leicester

Brighton continue to impressively accumulate points, although they were forced to wait until the 93rd minute for the only goal of the match against a dogged Leicester side.

Maisie Symonds curled in the late free-kick to give the Seagulls a fifth win of the season to remain in the Champions League places a third of the way through the campaign. Leicester, meanwhile, are still to register a point since their promotion, but this is the closest they have come so far.

West Ham 2-2 Reading

Reading fought back from 2-0 down to rescue a point against West Ham, securing a point with a stoppage time equaliser from teenage substitute Emma Harries.

Lisa Evans and Grace Fisk had scored West Ham’s goals in the first half. But a 70th minute own goal from Hammers midfielder Abbey-Leigh Stringer gave Reading a foothold, before Harries emerged as the hero to extend Reading’s unbeaten run to three games.
