The 2023/24 Champions League group stage produced some wonderful entertainment as top sides around Europe reached the knockout stages.

Clubs from the eight groups battled it out to make the last 16, with holders Manchester City and regular winners Real Madrid among the teams to wrap up qualification quickly.

Here's a roundup of the group stage action and the upcoming last 16 fixtures.


Group A

Winners - Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich took no prisoners as they stormed to 12 points from their first four games, sealing top spot. Their lengthy winning run at this stage of the competition ended on Matchday 5 as they were held by Copenhagen, but they concluded their group stage by waltzing past Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Harry Kane is back in form in Europe having scored only one Champions League goal in 2022/23 with Spurs, but Thomas Tuchel's side are off the pace in the Bundesliga title race and at risk of collapsing in the second half of the season.


Runners-up - FC Copenhagen

The Danish side were the lowest-ranked side in Pot 3 and weren't considered a threat when were paired alongside Bayern and Man Utd in Group A. However, Copenhagen stunned United at the Parken and won a straight shootout with Galatasaray on Matchday 6 to advance.

Arsenal's return to the Champions League has been positive and victory in their Matchday 5 clash with Lens secured their place at the top of Group B.


Runners-up - PSV Eindhoven

PSV Eindhoven's campaign started disastrously when they were thumped 4-0 by the Gunners in north London, but they recovered admirably to seal second spot before the final matchday.

Real Madrid wrapped up top spot in Group C with a game to spare, with England star Jude Bellingham shining in Europe for an injury-hit Los Blancos. A 3-2 victory over Union Berlin meant they became just the 12th team in Champions League history to win all their group-stage matches.

Napoli confirmed their runners-up status in Group C after comfortably beating Braga at home on Matchday 6.

Real Sociedad enjoyed a memorable group stage campaign on their return to the Champions League. The Spaniards' superior goal difference after drawing twice with Inter meant they pipped last season's finalists to top spot in Group D.

Inter had the chance to win Group D on Matchday 6 as they hosted Sociedad at San Siro, but they were held to a stalemate and forced to settle for second place.

After coming fourth in their 2022/23 UCL group, Atletico Madrid returned to form by booking their last 16 place with a game to spare and took first place by beating Lazio.

Atletico are joined by Lazio, whose late win over Celtic ensured they could not be caught by Feyenoord. The Serie A side reached the last 16 in 2020/21, when they were ousted by Bayern Munich.

Group F was the designated 'group of death' when the draw was made and it was Borussia Dortmund who secured safe passage by topping the group on the final matchday.

City threatened to throw away top spot by going 2-0 down to Leipzig on Matchday 5 but quickly composed themselves to confirm their status as group winners.

Their routine losses to Man City aside, RB Leipzig have been faultless in the Champions League so far this season.

A pair of wins against Crvena Zvezda and another victory over Young Boys made the German outfit impossible to catch for either of the group minnows.

Holders Man City must overcome Danish outfit Copenhagen, while fellow Premier League side Arsenal have Portuguese giants Porto to deal with.
