Atletico Madrid were perhaps the happiest of the Pot 2 teams as they were drawn in the same 2023/24 Champions League group as Feyenoord, the Dutch champions.

They were then joined in Group E by Serie A side Lazio, who had made a very poor start to the new season, meaning it was shaping up to be one of the weakest-looking groups in the tournament.

The group was then completed by Celtic who turned out to be no threat at all to the other sides as they only picked up a win on Matchday 6 when they had nothing to play for.

Who has reached the 2023/24 Champions League last 16 from Group E?

Always the favourites to progress from this group, Atletico Madrid made few mistakes. They had qualification in the bag before the final match against Lazio and knew that a draw was enough for top spot.

They ended up winning the game 2-0 and will be one of the teams to avoid in the next round. Atleti may have underwhelmed last season, but they won't be pushovers this time.

Potential last 16 opponents

  • Copenhagen (Group A)
  • PSV (Group B)
  • Napoli (Group C)
  • Inter (Group D)
  • PSG (Group F)
  • RB Leipzig (Group G)
  • Porto (Group H)

Lazio - Group E runners-up

Considering the incredible inconsistency Lazio have shown in Serie A this season, they have done very well to qualify ahead of a good Feyenoord team with a four-point margin.

The highlight was certainly goalkeeper Ivan Provedel scoring a 95th-minute equaliser against Atletico Madrid in the first game of the group stage to secure 1-1 draw. They did well, but seeded teams will fancy two legs against Lazio.

Potential last 16 opponents

  • Bayern Munich (Group A)
  • Arsenal (Group B)
  • Real Madrid (Group C)
  • Real Sociedad (Group D)
  • Borussia Dortmund (Group F)
  • Manchester City (Group G)
  • Barcelona (Group H)

Feyenoord - Europa League knockout round play-off

In terms of performances, there was plenty of reason to back Feyenoord finishing above Lazio in this group but they just stopped getting the results towards the end.

Ending with three defeats means they couldn't complain about getting knocked out, but they should be a tough opponent for anyone in the Europa League.

Things did not go to plan for Brendan Rodgers' side. Celtic feasibly could have escaped this group in another season or at least entered the Europa League but they only managed four points, three of which came on Matchday 6 against Feyenoord when both teams knew their fate already.
