Newcastle head into the Carabao Cup quarter-final against Leicester feeling like they have a genuine shot at ending their long wait for a major trophy.

That feeling is very justified, too. Eddie Howe’s men were one of the form teams of 2022 and appear to be in a good position to chase Champions League qualification this year.

The Magpies' quest for a trophy was not helped by a surprised FA Cup elimination to League One side Sheffield United this season, although Howe has admitted his team selection at Hillsborough was heavily influenced by prioritising the upcoming League Cup quarter-final against Leicester.

If they are to win the League Cup this year, though, they will have to create some club history to do it.

When did Newcastle last win the League Cup?

Newcastle’s long trophy-drought is well-publicised, but it still might surprise many to know that the Magpies have never actually won the League Cup.

They came closest in 1976 when they lost 2-1 in the final to Manchester City. To rub a little more salt into those wounds, it was Newcastle-born Dennis Tueart who scored the winner.

The rest of their League Cup history has been a case of quarter-final frustration. They have reached that stage of the competition eight times, with half of them coming since the 2014/15 season.

That record compares very poorly to what they have achieved in the FA Cup, which they have won three times - although not since 1955 - and reached another three finals.

When did Newcastle last win a trophy?

Unfortunately, we're not counting the Intertoto Cup Newcastle won back in 2006, so instead it's back to the 1950s.

the last trophy success the Magpies enjoyed came in 1955, when they lifted the FA Cup at the old Wembley. Jackie Milburn opened the scoring after 45 seconds, a record for quickest goal in the final that stood until 1997, but City finished the half in stronger form and equalised through Bobby Johnstone.

Further strikes from Bobby Mitchell and George Hannah ensured United ran out comfortable victors. They have appeared in three FA Cup finals since but not been victorious.

How many trophies have Newcastle won?

Newcastle fans are hopeful the recent takeover will result in silverware galore. The club has enough trophies to go around; it's just they weren't won very recently.

They have won England's top league title four times, the last of which came in 1927, while they have also won the second tier on four occasions after suffering relegation.

Other successes include the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, Anglo-Italian Cup and FA Charity Shield, giving them the ninth-highest total of trophies won by an English club.
