Manchester United defender Victor Lindelöf turned in his most heroic performance of the year back in his native Sweden, after detaining a thief who had stolen an elderly woman's bag.

While centre back partner Harry Maguire hit the headlines for being involved in an altercation in Mykonos on Thursday, Lindelöf has apparently spent his summer holidays fighting crime.

The defender had returned to his home city of Vasteras to spend his shortened post-season break prior to the football season resuming once more, but had his down time interrupted when he witnessed a theft.

According to Swedish news outlet Aftonbladet, Lindelöf was on hand to intervene after a 90-year-old woman had her purse snatched by a man on a bicycle.

The Manchester United man chased down the thief, caught up with him and pinned him to the ground in order to apprehend him. The police were contacted and arrived on the scene to find Lindelöf detaining the offender.

United confirmed the actions of their player to the Swedish paper, stating: "Victor feels that he just did what anyone else would have done in that situation."

A spokesman for the police said: "The man who intervened very resourcefully was athletically built, more than that I can not say. Obviously the person who caught the thief was good at short sprints."

Lindelöf will return to Manchester shortly to link up with his teammates ahead of the 2020/21 season.

He was last in action for United came during their Europa League semi final defeat to Sevilla, where he demonstrated his no-nonsense side during an on-field altercation with teammate Bruno Fernandes.

In contrast, teammate Maguire is expected to be left out of Gareth Southgate's upcoming England squad following his arrest and charges on the Greek island of Mykonos.

However, his long-term international future is not thought to be in doubt.
