A member of the Liverpool travelling party at a summer training camp in Austria has tested positive for coronavirus, according to a local report.

Liverpool had made plans to head to Evian in France until rising numbers of coronavirus cases in the country saw them choose the Austrian town of Saalfelden instead. Heading to France would have required a 14-day quarantine on their return as a result of updated UK government regulations.

There have also been plans for a training match against Red Bull Salzburg, former club of Sadio Mane, Naby Keita and Takumi Minamino.

The players and staff have had no public contact since arriving in Austria, but Kronen Zeitung now reports that someone, who remains un-named, within the club’s group has tested positive.

It is unclear for now whether the person in question is a player or part of the coaching or support staff. Liverpool are yet to comment on the matter, but the Liverpool Echo reports that training is expected to continue as normal in a bid to be ready for next season.

Having raised the Premier League trophy in July, Liverpool will start the new 2020/21 season later this month when they face Arsenal in the Community Shield at Wembley on 29 August.

The delayed new Premier League season, with Liverpool as defending champions for the first time in 30 years, will then start two weeks after that from 12 September – only around seven weeks since the domestic 2019/20 campaign season finished.
