FOOTBALL'S COMING HOME

Arise Sir Raheem Sterling. Arise Sir Harry Kane. England have beaten Germany in a major tournament for the first time since 1966 - this is not a drill!

Way, wayyyy before the nation erupted into a joint rendition of Sweet Caroline, we had the excitement of each starting XI being revealed. As is now tradition, England's lineup was greeted with unhinged anger from many.

Leaving both Jack Grealish and Phil Foden out was a brave call and England fans were keen to make their feelings known.

Germany started the game extremely well. Key to this was their midfield. They looked confident in possession, did not allow England a moment's rest and their movement was terrific.

Declan Rice seriously struggled to contain them, bringing Leon Goretzka down on the edge of the box...

After this early scare, England dramatically improved thanks mainly to Bukayo Saka. The Arsenal youngster broke the German press single handedly at times and gave his side the belief to grow into the game.

England's improvement brought chances for Harry Maguire and Raheem Sterling. However, the best opportunity of the half would fall to Harry Kane.

The ball broke to the Three Lions captain fortunately in the box and he tried to round the keeper - only for the ball to get away from him.

It was heart-wrenching stuff.

Early in the second half Jordan Pickford was forced into a stunning save to deny Kai Havertz. There were fears that this would set the tone for the following 45 minutes, but we were wrong.

Instead, things settled down with chances at a premium. England looked particularly sterile in possession and the entrance of Jack Grealish just after the hour mark was greeted like the second coming.

However, it would not be Grealish who would change the game. Instead, Sterling would send Wembley into hysterics, tapping home Luke Shaw's pass to give England the lead.

The goal sparked genuinely bonkers scenes not just at the Home of Football, but also on Twitter.

Minutes later, Thomas Muller nearly ruined things - only to drag his one-on-one wide...

Sterling couldn't believe it, we couldn't believe, you no doubt couldn't believe it either.

Just when we thought things couldn't get any crazier, England scored again!

This time Kane - who had received so much criticism beforehand - was the hero, nodding home Jack Grealish's effort.

The strike capped off an incredible result and a historic night in English football history.

One more thing before we sign off...

IT'S COMING HOME!
