Few games have summed up what being a Manchester United supporter in 2020 feels like as well as Sunday's 3-2 victory over Southampton.

The game brought goals, drama, controversy and excitement, and by the time it was all said and done, fans were still none the wiser as to whether United are actually good at football or not. It's the United way.

The first bit of fun came before kick-off, when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer decided to finally give Donny van de Beek his first start in the Premier League.

United channelled that positivity at the start of the game and looked to be in control of things early on.

Marcus Rashford was perhaps a little unfortunate not to be awarded a penalty after he was challenged by Southampton's James Ward-Prowse, but neither the on-field referee not the VAR were ready to give the decision.

Gary Neville, however, was.

It was one of those 'I hope this doesn't come back to bite us' moments, and it looked like it had come back to bite United when they fell behind in the 20th minute against the run of play.

With what was Southampton's first shot on goal, Jan Bednarek rose highest from a corner and headed past the helpless David de Gea, who was left stranded by some sloppy defending.

That header turned the tide somewhat, and Southampton quickly began to look like they wanted two or three.

They got that second soon after courtesy of another free-kick from Ward-Prowse, whose curling effort was just too good for De Gea to stop.

To make matters worse, De Gea's knee collided with the post as he desperately dived to try and save the shot, and while he managed to continue, he was forced to come off at half-time. Dean Henderson's time to shine.

It wasn't only Henderson who came on at half-time. Solskjaer decided to bring on veteran striker Edinson Cavani for the struggling Mason Greenwood, and it turned out to be a masterstroke.

It was the summer signing's cross shortly before the hour mark which found Bruno Fernandes, who laughed at his reputation as a penalty merchant as he slid the ball past Alex McCarthy to give his side a lifeline.

Fernandes inadvertedly turned creator soon after as his deflected shot landed on the head of Cavani, who showed exactly why United brought him in by diverting the effort into the back of the net.

Game on.

We hit injury time and United were still pushing for a goal, but it wasn't looking good. The Red Devils were on top but couldn't find a way through.

Enter Cavani (again).

With the victory, the pressure has again eased on Solskjaer, whose changes at half-time single-handedly inspired United's comeback.

Next up for United is a visit from Paris Saint-Germain. Which United will show up? Stay tuned.
