The early kick-off at the 2022 World Cup so far has struggled to entertain in the wake of Saudi Arabia's stunning defeat of Argentina on the third day of the tournament.

For many, the Group G encounter between Cameroon and Serbia didn't appear to be the most enthralling of matchups despite both teams tasting defeat on Matchday 1.

Oh, how wrong were those naysayers!

Cameroon started the game without star goalkeeper Andre Onana, who was removed from the squad before kick-off due to a disagreement with coach Rigobert Song. Reports have been flying in regarding what exactly went down, with some speculating that the Inter goalkeeper questioned Cameroonian legend Samuel Eto'o's heavy involvement with the squad.

Nevertheless, Song's side put the Onana controversy to the back of their minds and they took the lead over Serbia just before the 30-minute mark through defender Jean-Charles Castelletto, who rose highest from a set piece.

Serbia, who garnered plaudits for their spirited showing against Brazil on Matchday 1, weren't behind for long and a rapid turnaround in first-half stoppage time saw them take a 2-1 lead into the break.

Dragan Stojkoviฤ‡'s side asserted their authority either side of the restart and they took full control of the contest as Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic tapped home his first goal of the tournament following a scintillating Serbian passing move.

3-1 up and seemingly in total control, that was it, right? Serbia would saunter to vic---- ENTER BIG VINNY ABOUBAKAR.

Song needed a spark and he turned to the veteran forward. Aboubakar replaced Martin Hongla after 55 minutes and he quickly went about salvaging Cameroon's World Cup campaign. The offside flag had initially ruled out his sumptuous scoop over Vanja Milinkovic-Savic before VAR revealed that the forward had timed his run in behind to perfection.

The sequence was the ultimate example of the striker putting his money where his mouth is after he dismissed the excellence of Egyptian forward Mo Salah earlier this year.

Aboubakar wasn't done there, however. After netting eight minutes into his substitute appearance, he swiftly added an assist to draw Cameroon level. The stalwart once again penetrated in behind the Serbian defence before crossing to Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting who tapped home a once unlikely equaliser with 25 minutes remaining.

An Aboubakar inspired Cameroonian blitz stunned Serbia, who took some time to recollect their thoughts before going again in the closing stages. Both teams needed the three points and the two managers set up their sides to win the game late on, but a seventh goal wasn't forthcoming as the spoils were shared in Group G.

For Cameroon, this thrilling point may well not be enough as they take on current favourites Brazil on Matchday 3. Serbia, meanwhile, will rue their rapid collapse after the hour and need Tite's men to do them a favour against the Swiss on Tuesday afternoon.

A crunch encounter with Switzerland beckons on Matchday 3.
