The trophies Manchester United can win this season
Impressive highs and humiliating lows have followed Manchester United in the decade following Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement.
It's been a prolonged period of instability at Old Trafford, but years of indifference and underperformance - barring a couple of prosperous years under Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer - are poised to be succeeded by an incredibly exciting era led by Dutchman Erik ten Hag.
The 52-year-old arrived in Manchester with an esteemed reputation following his work at Ajax, but his start to life as United boss couldn't have gotten off to a poorer start. Nevertheless, the Red Devils have since turned a corner under their new manager and they're swiftly evolving into a bit of a problem once more.
They've been in imperious form since Christmas, and their success in the cup competitions thus far has handed Ten Hag a brilliant opportunity to win a trophy or two during his first season at the club.
Here are all the trophies United could win in 2022/23.
Carabao Cup
This surely has to be considered as United's best chance of claiming some silverware in Ten Hag's debut season.
The Dutchman's side progressed into the semi-finals of the competition on Tuesday night following a 3-0 victory over League One outfit Charlton. However, the likes of Newcastle and Manchester City (who face Southampton in their quarter-final) are potential opponents in the last four, so it'll be far from a walk in the park for the Red Devils.
Nevertheless, United are vying for their sixth League Cup victory in 2023, with their last success in this competition arriving under Mourinho during Zlatan Ibrahimovic's sole full season at the club in 2016/17.
FA Cup
United booked their place in the FA Cup fourth round by beating Everton 3-1 at Old Trafford. They've since been handed yet another kind home tie with Paul Ince's Reading set to make the trip up to Manchester at the end of January.
While several rivals also progressed into the fourth round, Newcastle and Chelsea were eliminated with Wolves forcing a replay against Liverpool. Tottenham, Arsenal, and Manchester City all advanced, but the latter two teams are facing each other in the next round.
There's still a long way to go and the magic of the FA Cup means United could succumb when you least expect it, but they seem poised for a deep run in this competition.
Europa League
Defeat at home to Real Sociedad on Matchday 1 meant United's Europa League group stage campaign got off to a woeful start.
However, they responded by winning their remaining five games - including a 1-0 triumph in San Sebastian on Matchday 6 - to finish the group phase with 15 points. Remarkably, though, they finished second in the group with Sociedad advancing into the knockout phase as group winners due to their barely superior goal difference.
Thus, Ten Hag's side face Spanish minnows Barcelona in the play-off round in a bid to advance into the round of 16. That will be an enthralling tie and should United beat Xavi's Blaugrana, many will fancy them to go all the way in the Europa League despite the strength of the competition.
Premier League
Very few would've projected United to have an outside shot of the title come the start of the new year after they were slaughtered by Brentford on their second outing of the Premier League season.
But Ten Hag has quickly got the Red Devils playing a brand of football synonymous with his very best Ajax sides and they've enjoyed a perfect run of form since domestic action returned just before Christmas.
Only league leaders Arsenal (16) have accumulated more points over the last six games than United (15), and the 13-time Premier League winners are taking their unwavering momentum into mammoth January clashes against Manchester City and the Gunners.
Now, a title charge is unlikely, but United aren't out of the race just yet. They currently sit in fourth, nine points adrift of Arsenal at the summit. Should they triumph in their two major upcoming fixtures, then perhaps we'll be hearing more title talk around the Theatre of Dreams.
Nevertheless, securing a top-four spot is the overwhelming priority.
