Tottenham Hotspur's hopes of signing Inter star Lautaro Martinez have been all-but ended, with the Argentinian striker close to putting pen to paper on a new contract with the Nerazzurri.

Spurs launched a €70m bid to land the 24-year-old earlier in the summer transfer window, as they went in search of a possible replacement for forward Harry Kane, who was angling for a move to Manchester City at the time.

But Martinez rejected the opportunity to make the switch to north London, stating that his desire was to remain with Inter.

And Nerazzurri supporters will be delighted to hear that the Argentine has reached an agreement over a new contract in Milano, which will be completed and announced soon, as reported by Fabrizio Romano.

Martinez has never been interested in a transfer, despite Spurs' €70m bid. Inter's dire financial circumstances meant that they were forced to consider the offer, but the player refused to budge, effectively ending the Premier League side's hopes of striking a deal.

Instead, Martinez wanted only to receive an improved salary on his current £80,000 a week contract, which expires in the summer of 2023. The forward's agent Alejandro Camano reiterated this recently, stressing that the player had a 'perfect' relationship with the club.

“Lautaro is happy at Inter and in Italy," Camano told Cesar Luis Merlo. "His decision is to stay.

"His relationship with Inter is perfect. Lautaro is calm. It is true that there were offers, but today he is comfortable and we will sit down to talk about the future."

Camano then told FCInter1908: "Lautaro is an Inter player and is happy in Italy. He will never enter into conflict with the club. Never, this is reality."

Martinez's imminent contract announcement puts a complete end to any transfer rumours, with Atletico Madrid also believed to be monitoring his situation.
