Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that fans who traveled to Newcastle for Sunday's 6-1 hammering will be reimbursed by the club's first-team squad.

Spurs put in their worst performance of the season by some distance (which is saying something) and found themselves 5-0 down after only 21 minutes at St James' Park.

Interim manager Cristian Stellini opted to switch to a back four formation, but quickly realised the error of his ways and reverted to a back five when the damage had been done.

Harry Kane scored a second-half consolation for Tottenham, who somehow remain fifth in the Premier League table.

Daniel Levy released a statement on Monday taking accountability for the club's recent fortunes, replacing Stellini with Ryan Mason in the dugout until the end of the season.

And on Tuesday afternoon, the Spurs squad released a joint statement expressing their sorrow and promising to reimburse supporters who were present at St James' Park.

"As a squad, we understand your frustration, your anger. Sunday wasn't good enough. We know words aren't enough in situations like this but believe us, a defeat like this hurts," the squad said.

"We appreciate your support, home and away, and with this in mind we would like to reimburse fans with the cost of their match tickets from St James' Park. We know this does not change what happened on Sunday and we will give everything to put things right, starting against Manchester United on Thursday evening when, again, your support will mean everything to us. Together - and only together - can we move things forward."
