Thomas Hasal has signed a contract extension with the Vancouver Whitecaps, keeping him with the Canadian side through the 2023 MLS season with options for 2024 and 2025.

Hasal is expected to be the starting goalkeeper for the Whitecaps after former favorite Maxime Crepeau left for LAFC during the offseason.

“Thomas has shown us he has the ability to become one of Canada's best goalkeepers,” sporting director Axel Schuster said in a release.

“Over the past few years, working directly with our goalkeeping coach Youssef Dahha, Thomas is now ready for the next step, and we look forward to seeing him make the most of this opportunity.”

The goalkeeper has recorded two clean sheets in 16 regular-season appearances, and received call-ups to several Canadian youth national teams.

“I’m very happy to have signed a new contract,” Hasal said in a release. “Since coming to Vancouver, I’ve developed immensely with the help of the club and the staff. I’m looking forward to continuing that growth, but more importantly to doing everything in my power to help the club reach our goals.

“After last season, it was clear that we’re starting to build a culture here at the club and I’m excited to be a part of that. Vancouver has been my home over the past few years, and I want to repay the fans, club, staff, and my teammates, by showing I can be a top goalkeeper in the league.”

The team kicks off the 2022 Major League Soccer season on February 26 when visiting the Columbus Crew at Lower.com Field.
