Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has admitted that he was to blame for the calamitous second goal he conceded in Tuesday's 5-2 win at Liverpool.

Los Blancos have all but secured their route to the quarter-finals of this season's Champions League following their demolition of the Reds at Anfield in the first leg of their last 16 tie.

Braces from Vinicius Junior and Karim Benzema either side of Eder Militao's header ensured that the reigning champions head back to the Santiago Bernabeu with a three-goal cushion, though the tie could have panned out very differently.

A deft flick from Darwin Nunez gave Liverpool an early lead, and then a horror show from Courtois gifted Mohamed Salah a second goal.

While attempting to control a bouncing back-pass, the Belgian was caught in two minds and the ball ended up bouncing off his knee, allowing Salah to quickly slot the ball into the net.

Speaking post-match, Courtois held his hands up and took the blame.

"That second Liverpool goal was slightly bad luck that I messed it up," he said. "I had the ball under control and I wanted to pass it immediately but I saw that Salah had stopped so I changed my mind and tried to move it on to my right foot but it bounced off my knee

"Vinicius' goal gave us wind beneath our wings and then Alisson Becker had a moment like mine and everyone knows that, on the counter-attack, we're strong.

"We're never beaten, we always react. Those two quick goals did help us to do that. We were calm, mentally, and when we are on the rise we play well.

"It's my first time playing Champions League football at Anfield when fans are in the stadium and the fact that there was applause from Liverpool supporters for Luka [Modric] and Karim just proves that people here know how to appreciate guys who are great players."
