The Manchester United Lineup That Should Start Against Arsenal
Manchester United welcome Arsenal to Old Trafford on Sunday in a Premier League encounter that sees the clubs go head to head for the 233rd time.
Although they sit two points adrift of the Gunners in the top-flight standings, United head into this fixture having recently recorded impressive victories over the likes of Paris Saint-Germain and RB Leipzig in recent weeks.
Here's the side Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should select on Sunday.
1. Goalkeepers & Defenders
David de Gea (GK) - The Spaniard has improved significantly this season and was in fine form in Paris. It is difficult not to think that having genuine competition in the form of Dean Henderson has played a part in that.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka (RB) - One of United’s most consistent performers. Wan-Bissaka has firmly cemented his place as United’s first choice right-sided player either as a right back or right wing back.
Victor Lindelof (CB) - Has somewhat silenced his critiques of late, featuring in the clean sheets against Chelsea and Leipzig as well pairing up superbly with Axel Tuanzebe to shut out the world’s most expensive players in Paris. A definite starter.
Harry Maguire (CB) - Rediscovering the sort of form that earned him his move from Leicester. Still a way to go, but the skipper will have to have his wits about him with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and co coming to town.
Luke Shaw (CB) - Had arguably his best game of the season against RB Leipzig. Managed the high press well and will be expected to do the same at Arsenal with Alex Telles having tested positive for COVID-19.
2. Midfielders
Scott McTominay (DM) - A firm favourite of Solskjaer’s. McTominay has been favoured over both Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba on several occasions already this season and, along with Fred, offers United’s forwards more creative license. Should return after being rested in the Champions League.
Fred (CM) - Putting in one of his best runs of form in a United shirt. Fred arrived at Old Trafford with a great deal of expectation and is slowly winning fans over with his try-hardy performances. Has been key alongside McTominay in the anchor role.
Paul Pogba (CM) - Will be key to United if they opt for the diamond midfield that worked so well against Leipzig. Put in a solid performance both defensively and going forward midweek and should be rewarded with a League start.
Bruno Fernandes (AM) - The Portugal star is thriving in Manchester and will look to keep up his impressive goal contribution tally against a side he’s never played against before. Was rested to allow Donny van de Beek some game time in Europe, but will be the first name on the team sheet for this one.
3. Forwards
Marcus Rashford (ST) - Bossing MPs and defences, Rashford’s wonderful second-half hat trick after coming on off the bench versus Leipzig was nothing short of spectacular. Will surely start against the team where he picked up his first ever Premier League goals back in 2016.
Mason Greenwood (ST) - Got on the scoresheet in midweek and is always a threat in front of goal. Not quite as proven a goalscorer as Edinson Cavani, but is a fine player and should partner Rashford up top for this one.
