The Best 2020/21 Champions League Goals From Gameweek 1 - Ranked
The Champions League is back, and it didn't disappoint in its first gameweek.
There were some shocks here and there, while plenty of the regular big hitters got their campaigns off to winning starts. There were some terrific goals, too.
So let's get ranking. But first, a big shout out to Chelsea and Sevilla, who played out a drab 0-0 draw to make writing this that much easier. There's still a load of other goals to get through, mind.
30. Ethan Horvath Own Goal vs Club Brugge
Ok, the 'own goal' element takes away a little prestige from Dejan Lovren's strike, but what a strike it was.
The former Liverpool man unleashed an absolute howitzer that came back off the post, hit Horvath and bounced in.
29. Jean-Daniel Akpa Akpro vs Borussia Dortmund
Perhaps Dortmund could have been a little tighter in defence, but by this stage they were chasing an equaliser and were undone by some smart play from Ciro Immobile.
The striker collected the ball out wide, creating space for Akpro who sealed the deal for his side.
28. Zlatko Junuzovic vs Lokomotiv Moscow
A couple of deflections on Junuzovic's strike here, but the build-up play was still delightful.
The Salzburg midfielder had plenty of space on the edge of the box to slide his effort in.
27. Alvaro Morata's First vs Dynamo Kyiv
Ah, if only Dejan Kulusevski's shot had squeezed in, this goal might have placed higher.
But regardless, Aaron Ramsey's backheel and Morata's instinctive finish on the rebound mean this places inside the top 30.
26. Ciro Immobile vs Borussia Dortmund
For one of Europe's best strikers, Ciro Immobile hasn't had many opportunities in the Champions League. But he made a great start against former club Dortmund.
Picked out by Luis Alberto, the Italy international deftly clipped in for the first goal of the game.
25. Angelino Second vs Istanbul Basaksehir
Smart work from Yussuf Poulsen saw Leipzig break with pace against Basaksehir, before Christopher Nkunku found Angelino in space.
The 23-year-old struck home with power, opening up his body to send his effort past the goalkeeper.
24. Ousmane Dembele vs Ferencvaros
Put on a plate by Lionel Messi, but who doesn't love a thumping side foot finish from close range?
That's what Dembele did, wrapping up a fine individual performance with Barcelona's fifth against Ferencvaros.
23. Philippe Coutinho vs Ferencvaros
Coutinho is back in favour at Barcelona and showed what he can do with this strike in that same game.
Messi was heavily involved again before finding Ansu Fati, whose tidy flick set up a shooting opportunity for Coutinho. The Brazilian obliged, tucking into the bottom corner.
22. Alvaro Morata's Second vs Dynamo Kyiv
Morata busts a gut to get into the box here, but it's all about the quality of the cross from Juan Cuadrado.
It's a real 'go on, head me' delivery from the right that the Spaniard just needed to get a little flick on. He did just that to double Juventus' lead against Dynamo Kyiv.
21. Ansu Fati vs Ferencvaros
Lovely pass from Frenkie de Jong, this.
The finish from Fati wasn't the cleanest, but converting from that angle is no mean feat and the teenager made it look pretty simple.
20. Leon Goretzka vs Atletico Madrid
Efficiency, efficiency, efficiency. That's what Bayern Munich are at the moment, and midfielder Leon Goretzka fits that description perfectly.
The bulked up Germany international struck home Kingsley Coman's cut back, with just a little bit of help courtesy of a deflection.
19. Erling Haaland vs Lazio
The giant baby struck again against Lazio to keep his ridiculous form on the up.
He lashed this one with power, though it wasn't enough to stop Borussia Dortmund slumping to defeat in Italy.
18. Tete vs Real Madrid
Brilliant work from left back Viktor Korniyenko saw Tete slide in Shakhtar's opener in Madrid.
Korniyenko ran from the left into Real's box and set up Tete, who finished with ease to cap off a flowing move.
17. Vinicius Junior vs Shakhtar Donetsk
Fair play to Vinicius here. His side were playing poorly but had just pulled one back through Luka Modric, and the Brazilian youngster put a few more jitters into the bellies of Shakhtar's players with an excellent individual effort.
He stole the ball in a promising position and did the rest himself, skipping past a couple of defenders and sticking it in the back of the onion sack.
16. Pedri vs Ferencvaros
A nicely worked goal from Barça here, with Frenkie de Jong, Sergio Busquets and Lionel Messi all involved.
Dembele was found on the right and the Frenchman reached the byline before cutting back for Pedri, who scored low into the bottom for his first goal for the club.
15. Ferran Torres vs Porto
Phil Foden played a big role here, drifting wide to create space for 20-year-old Torres.
The Spaniard worked the ball on to his right boot, curling into the far corner.
14. Jonas Hofmann vs Inter
A lovely nutmeg finish here from Hofmann, but the goal was made by Florian Neuhaus' precise pass.
The ball cut Inter open and allowed Hofmann to charge through on goal, slotting it through Samir Handanovic's legs.
13. Kingsley Coman's First vs Atletico Madrid
More about the pass from Joshua Kimmich here.
The Germany international clipped the ball over the top for Coman, who raced in behind Kieran Trippier and controlled nicely before hitting the back of the net.
12. Aleksei Miranchuk vs Midtjylland
Nowadays if you're a forward who's just joined Atalanta, you've got to make an emphatic entrance.
On debut against Midtjylland, Russia international Miranchuk dug the ball out from under his feet to curl into the far corner. It'll give manager Gian Piero Gasperini something to think about at the very least.
11. Ilkay Gundogan vs Porto
You don't hit free kicks much better than Ilkay Gundogan's strike against Porto.
A lovely whip over the wall that sailed beyond the outstretched limbs of the goalkeeper.
10. Angelino's First vs Istanbul Basaksehir
Lovely touch here from Angelino, the left back sent out on loan again by Manchester City.
The Spaniard spun away from his marker with a wonderful turn before finishing with the same boot in one smooth action.
9. Luis Diaz vs Manchester City
The lad just kept running and running and running and running. Diaz slalomed from left to right, striking into the far corner past Ederson.
A cracking finish from the Colombian on his Champions League debut.
8. Manor Solomon vs Real Madrid
The phrase 'like a hot knife through butter' comes to mind here.
Real were all over the place during the first half against Shakhtar, but this goal was especially nicely worked. Solomon latched on to Tete's backheel and finished with composure past Thibaut Courtois.
Just ignore Eder Militao's decision not to chase back.
7. Marcus Rashford vs Paris Saint-Germain
He's a great man, Marcus Rashford, and he loves playing Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, too.
The England international accelerated into a shooting position and squeezed his strike into the far corner off the post to gift Manchester United a precious win.
6. Cristian Ramirez vs Rennes
This goal could have been defended a little better by Rennes, especially considering they had just taken the lead, but Ramirez's strike was still as sweet as a nut.
The full back turned winger swivelled 360 degrees before firing in at the near post from outside the box.
5. Kingsley Coman's Second vs Atletico Madrid
Coman ran the show against Atleti, showing what he's capable of when fit.
He majorly mugged off defender Felipe for Bayern's fourth, turning the Brazilian inside out before clipping beyond Jan Oblak.
4. Alejandro Gomez vs Midtjylland
Cracking one in off the bar just makes a goal look that bit better. Atalanta's main man Papu Gomez knows that.
From just outside the box, the Argentine sent one whizzing past the goalkeeper and in off the woodwork. Could have been higher here, but was a little central.
3. Dominik Szoboszlai vs Lokomotiv Moscow
19-year-old Szoboszlai has been linked with plenty of top teams in Europe, including Arsenal, and gave a reminder of his abilities against Lokomotiv Moscow.
Just check out the dip on this strike.
2. Luka Modric vs Shakhtar Donetsk
Real needed something a little special against Shakhtar Donetsk after going 3-0 down. They couldn't salvage a result, but Modric did treat us to a postage stamp strike ten minutes after half time.
The Croatian beat two men before firing into the top corner with terrific accuracy.
1. Corentin Tolisso vs Atletico Madrid
Modric's effort was pretty well struck, but this one from Tolisso was just a smidge better.
Straight as an arrow into the top corner. Simply delicious.
