Sporting Kansas City have announced the termination of midfielder Jose Mauri's contract with immediate effect.

The Argentine-born Italy youth international arrived at SKC last August as a replacement for outgoing USMNT midfielder Gianluca Busio, who departed for Serie A side Venezia.

Mauri - who enjoyed previous spells with the likes of AC Milan, Parma, Empoli, and Talleres - went on to make nine appearances at the end of the 2021 MLS campaign, scoring one goal and assisting another.

But this season, for reasons unclear, the 25-year-old has been restricted to just one substitute appearance, coming on in the 50th minute of SKC's 3-1 defeat to Atlanta United in Week One, only to be brought off again 27 minutes later. Mauri hasn't made a matchday squad since.

Mauri's departure opens up an international roster spot for SKC head coach Peter Vermes, while the club will no longer pay his salary, which was $660k per year according to the MLSPA, placing the midfielder eighth on the club's earners.

Sporting Kansas City have endured a tough start to the 2022 season, winning just two of their opening seven MLS fixtures and losing the other five. Vermes' side travel to Western Conference leaders LAFC on Sunday afternoon.
