Inter boss Simone Inzaghi has confirmed the club are interested in signing Manchester United transfer target Benjamin Pavard from Bayern Munich.

27-year-old Pavard wants to leave Bayern this summer in a serach of a new challenge, and has been linked with a move to United in recent weeks.

The Red Devils are looking to bolster Erik ten Hag's backline with further quality options, but their pursuit of Pavard - valued at around €40m (£34.5m) by Bayern - has been complicated by Harry Maguire's proposed move to West Ham falling through.

That means a deal for Pavard is unlikely to happen unless Maguire and United can meet again to discuss a severance package - the 30-year-old would need to drastically reduce his wages to move to Europa Conference League winners West Ham and is looking for compensation to do so.

Pavard has also been linked with Arsenal and Barcelona in recent weeks, though it's a move to Inter that appears to be gathering steam. Reports abroad suggest a £21.4m bid has already been turned down by Bayern but both parties are working towards an agreement.

And speaking to the media as Inter continue their preparations for the new Serie A season, manager Simone Inzaghi confirmed the club are indeed looking at the World Cup winner.

"He’s a target, I won't deny it," Inzaghi told reporters. "But I don't feel like talking about players from other teams.

"We don’t have a very large squad and we need an important player in that position. [Matteo] Darmian should be complimented for what he's done at Inter, but in all positions I need competition.”

Pavard was an unused substitute in Bayern's romping 4-0 Bundesliga win over Werder Bremen on Friday night, in a game that saw Harry Kane score his first goal for the club, and faces strong competition for a first team place if he remains at the Allianz Arena.

Dayot Upamecano, Matthijs de Ligt and Kim min-jae are three of the club's heavyweight options in central defence, while Noussair Mazraoui appears to now be Thomas Tuchel's first-choice right-back after initially struggling to settle in Munich after joining from Ajax.
