Shaun Goater joins Man City Women coaching staff

Manchester City legend Shaun Goater has joined the women’s team coaching staff under manager Gareth Taylor for at least the rest of the season.

Goater, who scored 103 goals in 212 appearances for the men’s team between 1998 and 2003, had already been helping out since January but is now a full-time assistant coach.

The 53-year-old has said his job is to provide ‘insight and input’ for forward and wide players in training, as well as be an extra pair of eyes for Taylor on matchdays when it comes to understanding the tactics that the opposition might be using.

“It’s been such a joy, it’s been a real treat, because the girls are typically some of the best in the world,” Goater explained to City’s official website.

“It’s a real joy to work with them. In particular, Bunny [Shaw] has been doing really well so it’s just giving her one or two little tips to add to what she’s already been doing. But also to the knowledge and information Gareth’s been giving.

"For me, it’s been more specific because Gareth is thinking about the team as a whole and I can come in as a striker, as a centre-forward. [I can say] ‘in this position here, and the ball’s over here – consider this type of movement, being in this blind spot of the defender to come in and show'.

“Just giving little tips like that.”

Having joined from Bristol City in 1998, Goater is a City legend for his role in promotion campaigns in 1998/99, 1999/00 and 2001/02, before helping the club reconsolidate its Premier League status.
