Barcelona have confirmed that Sergi Roberto has inked a new 12-month contract at Camp Nou.

The versatile right-back had entered the final six months of his previous deal and there had initially been concerns that he could leave in the summer, but talks made progress earlier this year and an agreement has now been finalised.

Roberto is now under contract at Barcelona until the summer of 2024 and has been hit with a cool €400m release clause.

Now 31, Roberto joined Barcelona in 2006 and came through the ranks as a midfielder, but the vast majority of his 339 appearances for the club have come at right-back.

His versatility has always endeared Roberto to the various Barcelona managers over the years and current boss Xavi has never shied away from praising the 31-year-old.

"I see Sergi Roberto in training, doing well in matches...and yet still he is always criticised. I don't know how. He's a bigger Barca fan than the flag itself," Xavi said last month.

"Sergi Roberto is one of the most unfairly criticised players that I have ever seen. He always does well, in whatever position. He's very altruistic, a big Cule, and has an excellent attitude. I want him to renew and stay many years here."
