Chelsea general manager Paul Green has hailed Sam Kerr as a ‘born goalscorer’ following her four-goal haul against Vllaznia in the Women’s Champions League.

The reigning WSL champions cruised to an 8-0 win over the Albanian side at Kingsmeadow, with Pernille Harder also scoring a hat-trick and summer signing Katerina Svitkova also getting off the mark with her first goal for the club.

Kerr has won the WSL Golden Boot in each of the last two seasons but has only found the net once in the first five league games of the campaign. But with four goals against Vllaznia, all scored within a 40-minute period, the hope for Chelsea now is it serves as a catalyst.

“For her to get four in a Champions League game, Pernille to get three and Katerina chipping in with her first goal for the club, it couldn’t have gone any better really,” Green said, via the club’s official website as he continues to stand in for first-team manager Emma Hayes.

“Sam’s a born goal scorer. She’s won the Golden Boot the last two years and we never had any doubts she would score goals again this season, that’s what she’s made a career on.

“Getting four is going to give her a lot of confidence which hopefully she can take into the weekend and get on the scoresheet again. There has never been a doubt that she scores goals. You look at her record across her career and we haven’t been worried about that at all.”

Kerr initially took some time to find her feet when she first arrived in the WSL in January 2020, but then went on to score 41 goals in just 42 appearances over the 2020/21 and 2021/22 seasons.

Chelsea have taken 12 points from a possible 15 in the WSL so far this season, having suffered a shock defeat to Liverpool on the delayed opening weekend of the new campaign, and face Aston Villa at home on Sunday as they look to keep pace with Arsenal and Manchester United.
