Real Madrid make Michael Edwards approach following Liverpool exit announcement

Real Madrid are hopeful that Michael Edwards will become their new sporting director once he leaves his role at Liverpool at the end of the season.
The 42-year-old announced last month that this campaign would be his last at Anfield, bringing an end to a hugely successful spell that has seen the club sign the likes of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Virgil van Dijk.
The Independent report that Liverpool's business and overhaul of their recruitment department has impressed Madrid club president Florentino Perez, and he is keen on bringing Edwards to the Santiago Bernabeu to oversee a shift in transfer policy.
Spanish clubs have been particularly hard hit by the pandemic and this has forced Madrid into reevaluating their strategy in the transfer market.
They will still pursue big names but Perez hopes that by appointing Edwards, Los Blancos will have an edge on their rivals in signing slightly lesser-known players who are ready to make the leap and star for an elite club - Liverpool's moves for Salah and Mane are seen as the prime example of this kind of strategy.
While Edwards recently turned down approaches from Newcastle, the report adds that he has not shut down talk of a move to Spain.
Madrid are hoping that the appeal of working in the Spanish capital and having such control at another huge club will ultimately win Edwards over.
Edwards has helped oversee the most successful period in Liverpool's modern history, winning the Champions League in 2019 before their first Premier League title a year later.
