Real Madrid advanced to the Champions League quarter-final for the first time in three years, dispatching of Atalanta in comfortable fashion on Tuesday evening.

Atalanta started brightly and had a great chance to score after just two minutes when Luis Muriel's cross was directed straight at Thibaut Courtois by Robin Gosens. La Dea struggled to create much after that however, and Real Madrid capitalised as they scored a vital first goal after 34 minutes through Karim Benzema.

Things went from bad to worse for Atalanta when Rafael Toloi conceded a penalty that Sergio Ramos converted after 59 minutes - putting Los Blancos 3-0 up on aggregate.

The hosts looked increasingly comfortable after adding to their lead and started knocking the ball around with a little more swagger. However a spell of possession for the visitors saw them pull one back through a Luis Muriel free kick after 82 minutes.

Hope of a comeback was quashed instantly, as Real went straight down the other end and made it 3-1 on the night through Marco Asensio, securing their place in the last eight.

With that out the way, here are your Real Madrid and Atalanta player ratings.

Real Madrid ratings

1. Goalkeeper & defenders

Thibaut Courtois (GK) - 6/10 - A very quiet evening on the whole for the Belgian. Got a hand to Muriel's free kick, and is probably disappointed that he couldn't keep it out.

Raphael Varane (CB) - 6/10 - Didn't enjoy his best passing performance, but read play well and stepped out to stop danger from ever materialising into something truly threatening.

Sergio Ramos (CB) - 7/10 - Comfortable night defensively, having never really been troubled. Stepped up to slot away an important penalty in proper captain's fashion.

Nacho Fernandez (CB) - 7/10 - Strong both in his tackling and in carrying the ball forward for Los Blancos. A really tireless shift from Nacho who was all over the field to set the pace for his side.

2. Wing-backs & midfielders

Lucas Vasquez (RWB) - 7/10 - The utility man was at home in between defence and attack. Got stuck in defensively when needed but also brought his side forward with the occasional dribble, putting the ball on a plate for Asensio on the counter for the third.

Luka Modric (CM) - 8/10 - Brought his side forward with quick, smart passes and did well to pick out Benzema for the first instead of going for goal himself. Made 12 ball recoveries in the first half alone.

Toni Kroos (CM) - 7/10 - Comfortable on the ball and made Real Madrid tick when in possession - as per.

Federico Valverde (CM) - 5/10 - A quiet evening for the Uruguayan with Modric and Kroos pulling the strings.

Ferland Mendy (LWB) - 7/10 - Mendy thrived in a wing-back role, regularly linking up with his midfield colleagues and releasing Vinicius ahead of him on several occasions, if not bombing forward himself.

3. Forwards

Karim Benzema (ST) - 7/10 - Was never missing when Modric laid it on a plate for him in the first half. Benzema's work rate and link up play was solid as always, too.

Vinicius Junior (ST) - 7/10 - Won the penalty for his side with fine footwork and running, but will be disappointed not to score on the night himself. Brilliantly skinned all three Atalanta defenders inside the box early in the second half but poked the ball wide - a frustrating evening.

4. Substitutes

Eder Militao - 6/10

Rodrygo - 6/10

Marco Asensio - 7/10 -
Asensio bagged a goal from the bench. Nice one.

5. Goalkeeper & defenders

Marco Sportiello (GK) - 3/10 - Really careless attempt to play out which put his side 1-0 down and made the uphill battle even steeper. Beaten at his near post for the third goal too. Disappointing performance.

Rafael Toloi (CB) - 4/10 - Bombed forward on the outside of the defensive three, but it did leave his colleagues open to be countered on and made Romero's job a little harder at times. Conceded a silly penalty having been caught out which put the game to bed.

Cristian Romero (CB) - 5/10 - Didn't cover himself in glory for Real's first goal, playing the pass into his goalkeeper and then not tracking Benzema into the box.

Berat Djimsiti (CB) - 6/10 - Stepped out well and was aggressive with his defensive play at the right times. Let down by his defensive colleagues.

6. Wing-backs & midfielders

Joakim Maehle (RWB) - 5/10 - Didn't see enough of the ball to truly have an impact on the game, and struggled somewhat when Real's midfielders dropped into his wide area.

Marten de Roon (CM) - 4/10 - Too slow on the ball and simply not a match for Modric or Kroos.

Matteo Pessina (CM) - 5/10 -
Somewhat more aggressive than De Roon, but still lacked the quality to create genuine scoring opportunities for his side.

Robin Gosens (LWB) - 6/10 - Worked tirelessly both forwards and backwards, but should've done much better with Muriel's early cross. Forced off with a groin problem early in the second half.

7. Forwards

Ruslan Malinovskyi, Toni Kroos

Ruslan Malinovskyi (RW) - 5/10 - Spurned a decent chance at the end of the first half, creating a yard before fizzing the ball well wide.

Luis Muriel (ST) - 6/10 - Ran the channels but to varying levels of success. Gave Madrid's defenders too easy of a game, but earned a personal consolation with the free kick.

Mario Pasalic (LW) - 6/10 - Pressed relentlessly and got Atalanta up the pitch in the first half. Unfortunate to be subbed at the break, but his side needed the extra striker.

8. Substitutes

Duvan Zapata - 6/10 - Instantly gave his side more thrust and presence inside the box. Stung the hands of Courtois after 76 minutes, but lacked service.

Josep Ilicic - 5/10

Jose Palomino - N/A

Mattia Caldara - N/A

Aleksei Miranchuk - N/A
