RB Leipzig 0-1 Bayern Munich: Player ratings as Die Roten take huge step towards Bundesliga title

A first-half Leon Goretzka strike gave Bayern Munich a crucial 1-0 win away at RB Leipzig to increase their lead at the Bundesliga summit to seven points, and putting one hand on the Meisterschale.

The hosts started the match in blistering fashion but it was Bayern that broke the deadlock as they grew into the game. A Joshua Kimmich ball over the top was collected by Thomas Muller, who pulled it back for Goretzka to smash into the top corner.

Leipzig saw most of the ball after the interval and pressed for an equaliser, but Bayern's back line stood firm and never gave them any clear-cut chances. The Bavarians put defence first and saw out the 1-0 win, moving them seven points clear of their hosts at the top of the Bundesliga, potentially ending the race for the title.

1. Goalkeeper & defenders

Peter Gulacsi (GK) - 6/10 - Couldn't do anything about Goretzka's thunderous finish, but did make a couple of good saves throughout the game.

Nordi Mukiele (RB) - 6/10 - Marshalled and shut the door to Kingsley Coman well but wasn't as efficient going forward, failing to deliver real quality into the box.

Willi Orban (CB) - 7/10 - Read the game brilliantly and dealt with Bayern's runners well, making seven ball recoveries and a couple of clearances.

Dayot Upamecano (CB) - 6/10 - Composed on the ball, often bringing it out of defence and was strong defensively, nipping in at vital moments to deny Bayern's front men.

Lukas Klostermann (LB) - 5/10 - Unusually reluctant to step forward and impose himself in the final third. Was evidently worried about Leroy Sane and was a bit overrun by the winger at times.

2. Midfielders

Tyler Adams (CM) - 5/10 - Pressed high up and energetically, often winning the ball back to set moves going quickly but lost the physical battle with Goretzka in the centre of the field.

Marcel Sabitzer (CM) - 5/10 - Made some good surging darts into advanced areas but was fairly quiet and only produced quality sporadically. Also left a bit wanting defensively at times, notably not tracking Goretzka in the buildup to the opening goal.

Dani Olmo (AM) - 6/10 - Another to find it tough in the centre of the field but was very tenacious throughout and looked dangerous. Unfortunately snatched at chances which should've bulged the net.

3. Forwards

Christopher Nkunku (RW) - 5/10 - Started really well, putting in a couple of great crosses into the box but faded out quickly and didn't improve when put centrally, failing to register a shot on target or a key pass.

Emil Forsberg (ST) - 4/10 - Played as a false nine, drifting deep to get on the ball but struggled against Bayern's intense press. Hooked off at half-time without registering a single shot or key pass.

Amadou Haidara (LW) - 6/10 - Didn't stop running and biting at the heels of his opposite numbers, but couldn't make an impact upfield without feeling confident on his weaker left foot.

5. Goalkeeper & defenders

Manuel Neuer (GK) - 6/10 - As usual was very comfortable with his feet and always provided those in front of him with an option to avoid the press. Wasn't required to use his hands that much.

Benjamin Pavard (RB) - 6/10 - Afforded no time and space so couldn't find his passing range, but remained solid at the back, winning most of his aerial battles.

Niklas Sule (CB) - 7/10 - Proved difficult to bypass for Leipzig, making six ball recoveries throughout, while also playing some good balls out from the back into his midfielders.

David Alaba (CB) - 7/10 - Often stepped up to quickly nick the ball as it came into the opposition's attackers and timed his tackles well, making four ball recoveries. Stepped out of defence excellently too, relieving the pressure.

Lucas Hernandez (LB) - 9/10 - A really solid showing at the back. Most of Leipzig's moves came down his side and the left-back stood firm, making a whopping 11 interventions throughout.

6. Midfielders

Joshua Kimmich (CM) - 7/10 - Wasn't as influential as he can be, but grew into the game as time went on and started to dictate play from deep. Helped create the goal with a superb ball over the top for Muller.

Leon Goretzka (CM) - 9/10 - Matched, and bettered, Leipzig's physicality and power in midfield and relished the battle. Made eight ball recoveries and finished sensationally to bag the winner.

Thomas Muller (AM) - 7/10 - Roamed about freely and found space brilliantly. Managed to weave his way into the channels and provided an end product, assisting Goretzka - or SCOREtzka - for the opener.

7. Forwards

Leroy Sane (RW) - 7/10 - Found himself surrounded at times but did well to drive forward and threaten when possible, making one key pass. Also worked hard to track back and help his defensive colleagues.

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting (ST) - 6/10 - Was left isolated for the most part but generally had a decent game. Held the ball up well to bring others into play and made some really good flick-ons which could have been dangerous.

Kinglsey Coman (LW) - 6/10 - Was bright throughout and actually did well defensively, reading play to make a couple of ball recoveries high up. Couldn't quite beat Leipzig's back line and impact proceedings as he would've liked, though.
