Michail Antonio has been named the EA Sports Premier League Player of the Month for August, after registering four goals and three assists for West Ham to start the season.

The forward has been in sensational form, netting in all three of the Hammers' games so far - a 4-2 win over Newcastle, an emphatic 4-1 victory against Leicester and 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace.

His brace against the Foxes also made him the highest scoring West Ham player in Premier League history, overtaking cult hero Paolo di Canio.

Reflecting on the milestone, he said: "I saw that I was quite close to becoming the record-holder and I've been going for it," says Antonio. "Now I’m looking to go as far as possible so no one can catch me.

"Every now and then I'm like, 'Oh my God, I'm West Ham's record goalscorer', because when I signed here I couldn't even imagine being that.

"Everyone wants to make history at every club they go to. I've managed to do it a few times here. I love it, and every time I do it I write it down in my notebook at home."

Antonio beat off competition from Manchester United’s Mason Greenwood, Tottenham’s Eric Dier and Everton’s new arrival Demarai Gray to win the award. Marcos Alonso and clubmate Said Benrahma were also nominated.

In the end though, none of them came close to matching his exploits and he was a deserved winner.

Antonio kicked off a stellar month with a goal in his side’s win over Newcastle, before putting in a dominating centre-forward display as West Ham blew out Leicester 4-1. Most recently, he grabbed the Hammers’ second goal in a 2-2 draw with Palace.

West Ham manager David Moyes is also up for an August award but he seems unlikely to win with Tottenham head coach Nuno Espirito Santo the only Premier League boss with a 100% winning record this season.
