Newcastle will be aiming to begin the new year in style when they visit Liverpool in the Premier League on Monday.

The Magpies have struggled for form in recent weeks, losing four of their last five league matches, and have slipped down the table as a result. Defeats to Nottingham Forest and Luton Town in their last two will have set the alarm bells ringing for Eddie Howe.

The Newcastle boss does have a raft of injuries to contend with, but some key contributors have returned in recent weeks. The likes of Sven Botman and Alexander Isak should be fit and firing for the trip to Anfield as Howe welcomes back some influential starters.

Here is how Newcastle could line up against Liverpool on New Year's Day.

GK: Martin Dubravka - Nick Pope's injury has certainly not helped Newcastle but Dubravka remains an able deputy. However, there is still a drop-off in quality when the Slovakian starts.

RB: Kieran Trippier - The experienced defender has endured a rough month with his performances on the pitch subpar. The former Tottenham Hotspur man has made far too many errors, although he still provides an attacking threat.

CB: Fabian Schar - The Swiss defender has barely had a break this season and is unlikely to get one at Anfield, especially given Jamaal Lascelles' fitness concerns.

CB: Sven Botman - The Dutchman's return has been celebrated by Newcastle supporters, even if it hasn't solved all their issues. Botman has been a big miss for the Magpies and he will be tested by the likes of Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah on Monday.

LB: Tino Livramento - Dan Burn's return has impacted his game time after a run in the team, but he may be favoured to handle Salah at Anfield. Livramento has come on in place of Burn in Newcastle's last two matches and he may be more suited to combatting Liverpool's talisman.

CM: Lewis Miley - The youngster has been thoroughly impressive since coming into the team and could be given another almighty test up against Liverpool's rebuilt midfield.

CM: Bruno Guimaraes - The classy Brazilian has been an ever-present in the Newcastle team this season, understandably so given his qualities. Guimaraes will be hoping to help his side dominate the midfield battle on Monday.

CM: Joelinton - Only earned a place on the bench against Forest last time out but should return to the starting lineup at Anfield. The Brazilian will provide some bite in midfield.

RW: Miguel Almiron - The Paraguay international is significant for Newcastle in both halves and will be expected to track back regularly at Anfield.

ST: Alexander Isak - Scored on his last trip to Liverpool and ran the Reds' defence ragged. Will be hopeful of doing the same on Monday, using his pace to make darting runs in behind Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate.

LW: Anthony Gordon - The former Everton man found the net in the fixture with Liverpool earlier this season, causing Trent Alexander-Arnold plenty of problems at St James' Park. He will look to occupy the space vacated by the Reds' right-back once again but will have to be vigilant defensively as well.
