Newcastle United travel to Germany to face Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday night in search of the club's first victory away from home in the competition since 2003.

Eddie Howe's side have fed off the ferocious atmosphere of St James' Park this campaign, romping to a historic victory over Paris Saint-Germain on home turf while putting in a punchy performance despite defeat to Dortmund a fortnight ago.

Now Newcastle are targeting a first win on the road in Europe's elite competition in two decades. That rare away triumph arrived on the club's last Champions League trip to Germany in 2003, as Shola Ameobi and Lomana LuaLua fired the Magpies to victory over Bayer Leverkusen.

Here's the XI Howe may deploy to keep Newcastle's hopes of progressing from a tricky Group F intact.

Newcastle predicted lineup vs Borussia Dortmund (4-3-3)

Nick Pope

GK: Nick Pope - Only one other goalkeeper with more than a single appearance in this season's competition boasts a better Champions League save percentage than Pope. Unfortunately for Newcastle, it's Dortmund's Gregor Kobel.

RB: Tino Livramento - Didn't afford Arsenal's Gabriel Martinelli a sniff of space after being tossed straight into the heat of a fiery victory over the Gunners on Saturday.

CB: Jamaal Lascelles - November is barely upon us but Lascelles has already made more starts this season (eight) than he mustered across the entirety of the previous campaign (five).

CB: Fabian Schar - The Swiss centre-back has scored as many Champions League goals as the entire Dortmund team combined this season (one).

LB: Kieran Trippier - Injury to both Matt Targett and Dan Burn could force Trippier onto his unnatural flank - although that makes little difference to his displays.

CM: Sean Longstaff - John Farrage, chairman of Longstaff's youth team North Shields Juniors, recalled an incident that underscored the midfielder's "must-win character". "We had to ask his dad to take him off one day and calm him down," Farrage remembered. "He came back on and scored the winner!"

CM: Bruno Guimaraes - The only Champions League victory that Guimaraes has ever enjoyed away from his team's home ground was against Manchester City in the quarter-finals three years ago.

CM: Joe Willock - Still awaiting his first Champions League start, Willock already has six Europa League goals to his name.

RW: Miguel Almiron - A fixture of the team despite Newcastle's new riches, only Schar (80) has made more appearances under Howe than Almiron (78).

ST: Callum Wilson - Without the option of rotating in Alexander Isak, Wilson will have to [reserve his delicate fitness as Newcastle's only natural centre-forward.

LW: Anthony Gordon - Only six players in this season's Champions League have recorded a faster sprint speed than Gordon - surprisingly, one of them is his teammate Sandro Tonali.
