New York Red Bulls have signed midfielder Daniel Edelman to a four-year contract extension through the 2027 MLS season after his breakthrough 2023 campaign.

The 20-year-old was eased into the first team at Red Bull Arena after 41 appearances for Red Bulls 2 before making his MLS debut in 2022 season. The young midfielder made 16 appearances including 10 starts in his first season at the top level but shined in the following term despite playing for two different coaches. The new deal for Edelman also contains an option for 2028.

In 2023, Edelman became a mainstay in the New York starting XI, as he made 30 appearances across all competitions while starting 22 games in MLS action. Edelman helped Red Bulls snag an MLS Cup playoffs spot for the 14th straight season on Decision Day in October, which is a record for a North American professional sports team.

"We are very excited to keep Daniel at the club for the long-term and continue with us," Red Bulls head of sport Jochen Schneider said in a release.

"Daniel exemplifies all our core values and has a great winning mentality. He is a player that leads by example and will continue to represent our club in the best way on and off the field."

Edelman added one goal and one assist during the regular season and went on to tally his first postseason assist in Red Bulls' 5-2 triumph over Charlotte in the Wild Card.

New York, with former RB Leipzig midfielder Emil Forsberg already through the door, look ahead to what they hope will be a much brighter 2024 season under first-year head coach Sandro Schwarz.
