Mexico team news
El Tri took another “dos a cero” defeat to rival United States Friday night in Cincinnati, Ohio. With the loss, the Americans moved into first place on the Concacaf table, and are set to take on Jamaica a few hours before Mexico and Canada face off.
The team is still on track for a top-three finish, although a loss to the Canadians would push them into third place. Mexico have not missed the World Cup since the Cachirules scandal disqualified them in 1990, and have not failed to qualify for the tournament for reasons other than rules violations since 1982.
Canada team news
Canada have won back-to-back matches, standing undefeated since the 2-1 loss to Mexico in the Concacaf Gold Cup Semifinals in July. With a win, Canada can take second place in the Concacaf table.
Snowfall between 10 and 20 centimeters is expected in Northern Alberta Monday and Tuesday, making for potentially rough pitch conditions on Commonwealth Stadium’s natural grass turf. The temperature during the match is expected to be well below freezing, with a low temperature of 1 degrees fahrenheit Tuesday in Edmonton, although the temperature will be around 15 degrees during the match.
Predicted lineups
Canada: Borjan; Laryea, Vitoria, Miller, Adekugbe; Buchanan, Eustaquio, Kaye; Millar, David, Davies
Mexico: Ocho; L. Rodriguez, Araujo, Vasquez, Gallardo; C. Rodriguez, Alvarez, Herrera; Corona, Jimenez, Lozano
Mexico vs Canada head to head record
El Tri are 21-5-8 all-time against Canada, with the two sides having met twice already this year. Mexico won in July, 2-1 at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, and the teams tied 1-1 at the Azteca in October. Canada have never before defeated Mexico in a World Cup Qualifying match.
Mexico vs Canada score prediction
Mexico are coming off of a decisive loss to their archrivals, and headed into a hostile environment against a red-hot Canada team. Plus, the match will be played in Edmonton, with snow and temperatures colder than imaginable in Mexico. If Canada can keep up the momentum from their last few months of play, there is absolutely no reason why they can not pull off the upset over El Tri in freezing conditions.
Prediction: Canada 1-0 Mexico
