Chelsea caretaker manager Frank Lampard has tried to claim that his side's second-half performance in their loss at Arsenal was the result of his half-time team talk.

The Blues were beaten 3-1 at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday, though the Gunners were far superior from start to finish and probably should have won by a larger margin.

The visitors went into the break three goals down having given Arsenal the freedom of north London to essentially do what they want in the first half. Lampard responded by withdrawing ex-Gunners striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and replacing him with Kai Havertz to give them more of a focal point.

Chelsea managed to pull one back through Noni Madueke, who ghosted in behind Oleksandr Zinchenko and finished over the haphazard Aaron Ramsdale, but the game was always in Arsenal's control.

Lampard said in his post-match press conference that this minor second-half improvement may have been down to his team talk at the interval, though stressed he was as rousing pre-match.

"It was maybe things I said at half time that, to be fair, I said before the game," he said.

"I got asked before this game about playing the back five against Brentford, or playing the back four, back five, these things don't matter if you don't do the basics right.

"We've got to do the basics a bit better. We had a more dynamic nature, playing into the front and holding and making runs and getting up the pitch and creating a couple of decent chances, scoring a goal.

"Those things are good for the players to see in film. They're small gains at the minute, but that can't be 45 minutes, in the end, coming to a place like this."

Lampard has now lost all six games in caretaker charge of Chelsea since returning to Stamford Bridge in April.
