It has been a difficult start to the campaign for Manchester United despite a summer of big spending and a positive first season under manager Erik ten Hag.

A narrow and fortuitous 1-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers was followed by a disheartening 2-0 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur as the Red Devils have struggled to get going in the Premier League.

To make matters worse, Mason Mount - their £60m signing from Chelsea - picked up an injury during their loss at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and now faces some time in the injury room.

While Mount has not made a blistering start to life at Old Trafford, his absence will still come as a blow to Ten Hag.

Despite Mount's issue only being a "small complaint", the midfielder is still set to miss several games for Man Utd, including Premier League clashes with Nottingham Forest and Arsenal.

Mount is expected to be out until the international break in mid-September, making him a doubt for the England squad, although there is no guarantee of his place in the squad regardless of injury.

Gareth Southgate's men face Ukraine and Scotland before Man Utd's next Premier League clash, which comes against Brighton on 16 September. Ten Hag will be hopeful of having Mount fit by the time the Seagulls visit Old Trafford.

United have struggled in midfield this season already and Mount's injury is likely to exacerbate things. Even the dependable Casemiro has been some way short of his best as both Wolves and Tottenham cut through Ten Hag's midfield at will in the opening Premier League games of the season.

The positive news for Ten Hag is Mount doesn't have a history of significant injuries during his career so far, despite having spent some time in the treatment room.

Since the beginning of the 2021/22 season, Mount has missed 17 games through injury with Chelsea, 12 of which came last season during two separate spells.

Mount didn't finish last season with Chelsea, missing the last seven matches due to a pelvic injury. Considering the details of Mount's current "small complaint" have not been revealed, United supporters will be hopeful it is unrelated to his previous fitness issues.

Mount has generally been a dependable character during his career to date and United will want him back on the pitch as soon as possible.
