Following a season of promise in Erik ten Hag's first at the helm, a big 2023/24 beckons for Manchester United.

Reportedly working under tight financial fair play constraints this summer, United only recorded the fifth-largest spend in the Premier League - although, Ten Hag was still afforded more than £170m on new recruits.

A glut of departures, most notably former first-choice goalkeeper David de Gea, facilitated a further shake-up on the squad numbers front.

Here are United's squad numbers for the new season.

Andre Onana was signed as De Gea's direct replacement but the former Inter goalkeeper retained the number 24 shirt that he has previously worn in Italy and at Ajax. Onana explained: "I just like that number. It's my birthday. My date of birth. For me it’s great, it's beautiful. I like this shirt because [in] this shirt, this number we have done a lot and I hope it will continue."

Instead, deadline day arrival Altay Bayindir inherited the number 1 jersey after completing his move from Fenerbahce. The Brazilian midfielder Fred made the opposite journey, vacating the number 17 that Alejandro Garnacho inherited, upgrading from the 49 in which he started the season.

Mason Mount was United's first signing of the summer and took on the weighty mantle of the club's famous number 7. Rasmus Hojlund, the club's most expensive arrival of the off-season, was given 11 once Mason Greenwood secured a controversial loan to La Liga side Getafe.

What numbers can Premier League players wear?

Shirt number rules are fairly relaxed in the Premier League. Players can wear any number between 1 and 99 as long as it's unique within their squad.

First-teamers will typically don shirts between 1 and 30, although there are a few exceptions. Declan Rice, for example, wore #41 at West Ham and took that shirt number at his new club, Arsenal.

Can Premier League players change squad numbers?

Of course they can, but players can't change whenever they please.

Any switching of shirt numbers must be done before a specific deadline every season. Typically, this is when clubs submit their confirmed squad list for the upcoming season. In 2022, this deadline arrived on 1 September, and it should be a similar date this time around.
