Manchester United's Premier League record on the opening day

Man Utd lost their opening fixture of 2022/23 but have an excellent record on the first day overall; Erik ten Hag's side start the next Premier League campaign at home to Wolves.

13-time Premier League winners Manchester United were once the envy of all teams across the land.

Sir Alex Ferguson's ability to churn out title-winning outfits amid rising threats from the capital and Tyneside was borderline unprecedented and his retirement in 2013 left the club with an irreplaceable hole.

The decade since Fergie's departure has been rocky at Old Trafford and the club's recent oscillation in fortunes has coincided with the rise of their noisy neighbours. Once a pesky distraction, Manchester City have since emerged as the Premier League's dominant force who recently matched United's legacy of 1999 by winning the treble.

Nevertheless, United's record 13 titles since the competition's 1992 inception will be almightily tough to usurp and, more often that not, the Red Devils have gotten their league campaigns off on the right foot.

Here's a rundown of United's record in Premier League opening day fixtures.

Only Chelsea (69) have picked up more points than Man Utd (64) on the opening day of the Premier League. However, United's start to the competition was poor as they were beaten by Sheffield United 2-1 at Bramall Lane to open up the 1992/93 campaign.

That defeat was one of 12 games United have played on the road to open up the season, with the majority of their Premier League campaigns starting at Old Trafford. The Red Devils have begun their last six at the Theatre of Dreams, although they've been beaten in two of their previous three.

However, United have also secured two 4-0 victories and a 5-1 triumph since 2017.

While United have played out several goal-fests to begin the new season, their most famous opening day outing arguably came in 1995 when they were beaten 3-1 by Aston Villa. A young Red Devils outfit with the Class of '92 at its core was swept aside at Villa Park, which prompted Alan Hansen's infamous "you can't win anything with kids" comment on Match of the Day.

Ferguson's side then went on to lift their third Premier League title.
