Manchester City 0-1 Chelsea: Player ratings as Kai Havertz fires Blues to Champions League glory

Chelsea stunned Manchester City to secure Champions League glory on Saturday night, putting in a stellar performance to claim a 1-0 victory over the outplayed Citizens in Porto.

The game began at a surprisingly fast tempo, with Raheem Sterling recording the first notable attempt on goal. Timo Werner then had two brilliant chances to open the scoring, but he fluffed both, first mis-kicking horribly and then firing straight at Ederson from six yards out.

Chelsea continued to press and pressurise Man City, who were incredibly susceptible to the Blues' lightning counter-attacks and willing runners.

Thomas Tuchel's men broke the deadlock just before half-time, when Mason Mount picked out Kai Havertz with a stunning pass, and the German rounded Ederson to stroke the ball home and send his supporters wild.

Chelsea continued to control the game, and their fans must have thought Christian Pulisic had clinched the victory when he was played in on goal, but he clipped his shot agonisingly wide of the post to leave the trophy hanging in the balance.

Man City tried to pull level, but the Blues held firm to break Pep Guardiola and the Citizens' hearts and record one of the most famous victories in their history, clinching the Champions League trophy for only the second time.

MANCHESTER CITY

1. Goalkeeper & Defenders

Ederson (GK) - 6/10 - Had to be alert to get down low and dive on Werner's tame strike. Shouldn't have been given the option. Raced out to pinch the ball ahead of Havertz but could only watch the German round him and slot home.

Kyle Walker (RB) - 6/10 - Snuck in down the line and snaked a cross into the box, but Mahrez couldn't quite stretch enough to stick a toe onto the delivery. Lost the ball to Pulisic but raced back to stop the American from running through on goal.

John Stones (CB) - 6/10 - Endured a shaky evening, heading straight to a Chelsea player and then allowing Havertz to poke the resulting cross into the box. Then lost the ball on the edge of his own area. Nervous, to say the least.

Ruben Dias (CB) - 5/10 - Nowhere to be seen when Mount split the backline with his glorious pass. It was a beaut, but the defender's decision to follow a wandering Werner made it all possible. Poor.

Oleksandr Zinchenko (LB) - 5/10 - Allowed Werner to escape in behind with his arced runs too many times in the early exchanges. Watched Havertz peel inside and race through a gaping hole in the defence for the crucial goal. Switched off.

2. Midfielders

Kevin De Bruyne (CM) - 6/10 - Couldn't stamp his mark on the game, as Kante kept him well and truly under wraps. The first half passed him by, and Man City's midfield couldn't live with Chelsea's intensity. Suffered a terrible blow to the head in the second half and left the pitch in tears. Gutting.

Ilkay Gundogan (CM) - 6/10 - The most defensive-minded of the midfield trio, so must take some blame for their inability to stop the Blues flying forward. Not there to cut passing lanes when Mount when full Kaka to supply Kai.

Bernardo Silva (CM) - 6/10 - Deployed in the midfield to press Chelsea in their half, but couldn't get close enough. Substituted midway through the second half with Man City chasing the game.

3. Forwards

Riyad Mahrez (RW) - 5/10 - Anonymous in the first half, and closed down rapidly whenever he did collect the ball. Off the pace of the game and didn't offer the much-needed outlet.

Raheem Sterling (ST) - 7/10 - Escaped James to burst through on goal, but couldn't beat Mendy. Looked threatening with the ball at his feet, and caused problems with his direct running. Faded in the second half as Chelsea sat deep.

Phil Foden (LW) - 6/10 - Started the game quickly, showing some neat touches to nip between tackles and pass into space. Saw the goal gaping in front of him but Rudiger shut the door in his face. Targeted by Chelsea's midfield and struggled to find the room to operate. Frustrated.

5. Goalkeeper & Defenders

Edouard Mendy (GK) - 7/10 - Didn't overcommit when Sterling burst through early on, forcing him wide and making the save. Started the attack for the winner with a pinpoint ball wide. Always in control.

Cesar Azpilicueta (CB) - 8/10 - Solid first half, not allowing Man City's forwards the opportunity to race in behind. Used his experience to counter his deficiency in pace. Turned a cross over his own bar from close range.

Thiago Silva (CB) - 6/10 - Went up for a header and the landing left him holding his groin. Tried to soldier on but knew his race was run. Subbed off after 40 minutes and looked heartbroken.

Antonio Rudiger (CB) - 8/10 - Raced across the backline to smother Foden with the whole goal to aim at. An unbelievable tackle. Chelsea scored soon after - a key moment. Commanding throughout.

6. Wing-Backs & Midfielders

Reece James (RWB) - 8/10 - Did well to recover and poke the ball away from Sterling when in behind. Often had to keep an eye on Sterling plus a mate, and defended those one on one and two on one situations with great strength and confidence. Frightening ability for such a young guy.

N'Golo Kante (CM) - 8/10 - Rose above two defenders to head just over the bar. Was in his own box mopping up only seconds before. Always positioned in the right place to deny De Bruyne and shield his backline. Produced a stunning slide tackle from behind to dispossess a dangerous KDB. Superman.

Jorginho (CM) - 7/10 - Dominated the early stages, holding possession and then popping it off for others to release over the top. Shielded the back three with Kante superbly. Underrated.

Ben Chilwell (LWB) - 8/10 - Flew back into the six-yard box to deny a certain goal. Vital. Menacing going forward too, overlapping and adding an extra body on that flank.

7. Forwards

Mason Mount (RW) - 8/10 - Robbed Stones on the edge of his own box and supplied Werner. Should have been an assist for the statistics. Ripped Man City apart with an outrageous defence-splitting pass for the winner. What a contribution on the biggest stage.

Timo Werner (ST) - 7/10 - He does not help himself. Had the chance to open the scoring, but completely air-kicked from six yards out. Classic Timo. Then missed another glorious opportunity minutes later, tripping over the ball. Created the winner by pulling Dias out of position. Subbed.

Kai Havertz (LW) - 9/10 - Did all the hard work in reaching the byline and cutting the ball back to Werner, but the forward misfired. Darted away from Zinchenko to go through on goal, and showed plenty of calm to nick the ball beyond Ederson and into the net. A match-winner, after a tough season.
