Holders Manchester United begin their Carabao Cup campaign on Tuesday night as they host Premier League rivals Crystal Palace in round three.

The highlight of Erik ten Hag's debut campaign in Manchester arrived at Wembley as the Red Devils efficiently bypassed Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final. United then went on to secure a top-four finish in the Premier League, but they've since endured a tricky start to the 2023/24 campaign.

After recording three straight defeats in all competitions, Ten Hag's side notched an ugly but necessary victory at Burnley on Saturday ahead of Tuesday's cup tie.

Palace have already been in Carabao Cup action this season as they were forced to come from behind to beat Plymouth in round two. It's been a typically decent opening to the season for Roy Hodgson's men, who are poised for yet another mid-table Premier League finish.

Here's 90min's preview of the upcoming Carabao Cup fixture at Old Trafford.

Ten Hag will undoubtedly shuffle his pack from Saturday's victory at Turf Moor, but the Dutchman likely won't make wholesale changes.

The hosts are still without several key players, with Mason Mount and Luke Shaw sidelined. They've since been joined on the sidelines by Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, while Tyrell Malacia and youngster Kobbie Mainoo are also out.

Raphael Varane earned minutes off the bench at Burnley and could make his first start since the victory over Nottingham Forest on Tuesday. Sofyan Amrabat is also in contention for his maiden United start.

Michael Olise remains out for the visitors with a hamstring injury, and the winger's not expected to return until after the October international break.

Hodgson also won't be able to call upon the services of Nathan Ferguson and Matheus Franca on Tuesday night, while Jefferson Lerma and James Tomkins are both doubts.

Youngster Jesurun Rak-Sakyi could start the cup tie at Old Trafford.

Man Utd vs Crystal Palace score prediction

United regained a bit of momentum at the weekend following three-straight defeats, and while this is an early round cup affair, this remains an important fixture for Ten Hag at the start of the new season.

While they were recently brushed aside by Brighton on home soil, United are typically a tough side to beat at Old Trafford and last season's Carabao Cup run was aided by a string of home draws.

This is a bigger game for United than it is for Palace, and the hosts should edge it.

Prediction: Manchester United 2-1 Crystal Palace
