Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag may be able to call upon Alejandro Garnacho for the trip to West Ham United on Sunday.

The young Argentine winger, who recently signed a new contract running until 2028, has missed United's last 12 games after picking up a nasty ankle injury in the 0-0 draw with Southampton in March.

Garnacho's breakthrough campaign has yielded four goals and five assists in all competitions, with his emergence giving Ten Hag a good complement of attacking options.

It was feared that Garnacho's ankle problem would rule him out for the remainder of the 2022/23 campaign, but Ten Hag offered a promising update ahead of the trip to London Stadium by confirming he could make Sunday's matchday squad.

"No, I think it will be the same squad,” Ten Hag initially said, before adding: "Maybe one player [to add]: Garnacho. I have to see.

"Maybe he can be involved but we will have to see how the progress can go."

United won't be able to call on Raphael Varane or Scott McTominay for the trip to the capital, while Lisandro Martinez and Donny van de Beek are guaranteed spectators for the remainder of the season.

Victory for United at West Ham would help strengthen the club's grip on fourth place in the Premier League, which will secure a return to next season's Champions League.

The advantage over fifth-place Liverpool currently stands at four points - United have played a game less - but the momentum of recent weeks was halted by Thursday's dramatic 1-0 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion, courtesy of Alexis Mac Allister's penalty nine minutes into added time.

Luke Shaw was the guilty party for the Red Devils, needlessly handling the ball from a corner, as David de Gea's bid for a 16th clean sheet fell by the wayside. The Spaniard is, however, leading the race for the Premier League's Golden Glove.
