Man Utd confirm appointment of Ewan Sharp as assistant coach

Manchester United have confirmed the appointment of Ewan Sharp as an assistant coach and analyst, reuniting him with interim manager Ralf Rangnick.

Rangnick has already brought in former New York Red Bulls and Toronto FC head coach Chris Armas as an assistant, as well as sports psychologist Sascha Lense, having worked with both previously.

It wasn’t the intention for Rangnick to completely change the primary coaching staff at United. It was recently reported that he wanted both Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna to stay, but the departure of both, as well as Martyn Pert, has necessitated extra faces being brought in.

Having served briefly as caretaker manager, Carrick announced his departure immediate after his last game in charge against Arsenal earlier this month and is expected to take some time away from football to spend with his family.

McKenna, meanwhile, has taken the plunge by accepting his first managerial gig and joining Ipswich. Pert has followed the 35-year-old to Portman Road as assistant manager.

United have issued a statement confirming the appointment of Sharp, who is already to known to Rangnick from working at New York Red Bulls and more recently with the German at Lokomotiv Moscow.

Sharp has also worked with Armas, having served as an assistant coach Toronto FC and primarily focusing on opposition scouting and match planning.

With Mike Phelan staying at Old Trafford, it means that Rangnick will have a core lead coaching team that is four strong, with the additions of Armas, Sharp and Lense.

United haven’t played since 11 December after back-to-back games were postponed due to a COVID-19 outbreak, but are due to next play against Newcastle on 27 December.
