Manchester United are set to send Sergio Reguilon back to Tottenham Hotspur after agreeing to cut short his season-long loan.

Reguilon signed for the Red Devils late in the summer 2023 transfer window on a deal until the end of the season. United were in need of depth at left-back following injuries to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia, while Reguilon was surplus to requirements at Spurs.

Though he has made 12 appearances for United this term, The Athletic report that Reguilon will now head back to Tottenham. United were in mind to trigger a break clause in the loan deal at the midway point of the season anyways and have been recently strengthened by Shaw's return to fitness, while Malacia is not too far away from a comeback either. Right-back Diogo Dalot and midfielder Sofyan Amrabat have also filled in on the left when required.

Prior to signing Reguilon, United also considered a move for Chelsea's Marc Cucurella, but they could not reach an agreement with the Blues and he stayed at Stamford Bridge.

Reguilon featured heavily for Tottenham in pre-season under new head coach Ange Postecoglou, but it was quickly made apparent that Destiny Udogie would be the starting left-back heading into the 2023/24 campaign.

Spurs could decide to keep Reguilon for the remainder of their season - they, like United, are only competing in the Premier League and FA Cup - while the possibility of him leaving on loan again remains so long as he does not make a first-team appearance this month. FIFA rules decree players can only feature for two clubs in any given season.

Tottenham's next match comes on Friday with the visit of Burnley in round three of the FA Cup, and they return to Premier League action on Sunday January 14 with a trip to United.
