Lisandro Martinez has been ruled out for the rest of the season after picking up a foot injury in Manchester United's 2-2 draw with Sevilla on Thursday, while Raphael Varane will miss the next few weeks of action.

The Argentina centre-back had to be carried off the Old Trafford pitch by national teammates Gonzalo Montiel and Marcos Acuna after innocuously falling to the floor and clutching his right foot.

There were fears that Martinez had snapped his Achilles and suffered one of the worst injuries an athlete could pick up, but Erik ten Hag dismissed this in his post-match press conference.

In a statement on Friday evening, United confirmed that Martinez's debut campaign at Old Trafford is over after fracturing a metatarsal bone in his foot. He is expected to be fit in time for the start of next season.

They added that the foot injury picked up by Varane will see him spend a few weeks on the sidelines amid reports that his season too could be over.

United are still competing on three fronts, with the second leg of their Europa League quarter-final against Sevilla taking place next Thursday before they face Brighton in the FA Cup semi-finals three days later.

This injury crisis could also jeopardise their chances of a top-four finish in the Premier League - United currently sit three points clear of fifth-placed Tottenham though have played a game fewer and still have to travel to north London this month.
