Manchester United have unveiled their new adidas away kit for the 2023/24 season, featuring a return to vertical stripes.

The Red Devils' changed strips at the start of the 20th century featured stripes with various colours, while green-and-gold and blue-and-white combinations proved popular on away kits in the 1990s.

For the coming season, adidas have opted to craft a striped kit with colours which reflect the aesthetic of Manchester. The green base is said to represent the urban architecture, with the red lines on white stripes echoing the city's brickwork.

Long-sleeved versions of the away shirt give the illusion of featuring further white lines which accompany adidas' trademark three stripes.

Inigo Turner, adidas' design director said: "We're incredibly excited to return to a design that is fundamental to the heritage of this great club.

"Vertical stripes are in the DNA of Manchester United and we hope this bold new look captures the imaginations of fans as they travel the globe supporting the team. We have intentionally taken cues from the city itself, to provide both the players and travelling fans with a piece of home, wherever they are wearing it."

United will wear their new away kit for the first time when they take on Wrexham on July 25 as part of their tour of the US, and it is now available to purchase at United's club stores and selected adidas retail stores as well as online.

The Red Devils' pre-season has gone swimmingly so far, with Erik ten Hag's side coasting to victory in the three games they have played so far. Recently relegated Leeds United were seen off 2-0 in United's first game, before Lyon out to a Donny van de Beek goal at Old Trafford.

Last season's title challengers Arsenal were then defeated on Saturday night by goals from Bruno Fernandes and Jadon Sancho - United also won the penalty shootout that followed at MetLife Stadium.
