For Manchester United supporters, the October international break provided some much-needed respite.

Despite a dramatic late victory over Brentford just before the break, it has been a tough start to the campaign for the Red Devils. Inconsistent performances and results have not been helped by an extensive injury list at Old Trafford and Erik ten Hag will have kept both fingers crossed that all his players return from their respective nations in good condition.

The Dutchman's injury woes haven't eased significantly over the international period, but there are a few significant names who are getting closer to a return.

Casemiro

  • Injury: Ankle
  • Return date: Sheffield United (A) - 21/10/2023

One piece of positive news for Erik ten Hag is that Casemiro should be fit and ready to feature for Man Utd against Sheffield United this Saturday. The midfielder was substituted after just 11 minutes against Venezuela with an ankle injury during Brazil's first clash of the international period.

However, any fears that Casemiro would be missing for Man Utd have been eased by the fact that he played the entirety of Brazil's 2-0 defeat to Uruguay in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

  • Injury: Unknown
  • Return date: Sheffield United (A) - 21/10/2023

Having missed the Brentford clash with a 'minor' knock, Raphael Varane should be available again for the trip to Bramall Lane on Saturday.

Ten Hag reassured United supporters Varane would have been available for United's clash with the Bees had the game come a few days later, so he should be ready to start against Sheffield United after a period of rest.

Sergio Reguilon

  • Injury: Hamstring
  • Return date: Sheffield United (A) - 21/10/23

Having been brought in to help ease United's injury concerns at left-back, Sergio Reguilon has only added to them. The Tottenham loanee has missed the last few games with a minor hamstring problem, but is nearing a return.

If Ten Hag is lucky, the Spaniard should be ready to play some part against Sheffield United, but even if he's unavailable for the trip to Bramall Lane, he should be fit and firing soon.

Lisandro Martinez

  • Injury: Foot
  • Return date: At least December 2023

Lisandro Martinez's injury concerns date all the way back to April, with the Argentine recovering from a foot injury to feature at the start of the season. However, the defender has since aggravated the problem, needing surgery as a result.

Therefore, the World Cup winner will be out for a significant period of time and could be missing for the Red Devils until the beginning of 2024. There is some hope Martinez will recover by December, with United needing him back sooner rather than later.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka

  • Injury: Hamstring
  • Return date: Late November 2023

Aaron Wan-Bissaka has been one of the few Man Utd players who has performed close to his best this season, but the club's full-back injury curse has impacted him as well. The defender suffered a hamstring injury during defeat to Brighton back in mid-September and remains sidelined for the return of the Premier League this weekend.

The former Crystal Palace man is expected to return in November, perhaps featuring again after the next international break in a month's time.

Luke Shaw

  • Injury: Muscle
  • Return date: Early November 2023

Luke Shaw was one of Man Utd's first injury layoffs, picking up a muscle injury against Tottenham Hotspur in just the second game of the season. While no official timeline has been put on the left-back's return, he is yet to return to full training.

Subsequently, Shaw is likely to be missing for several more weeks at least and could be in line for a return to action in early November.

  • Injury: Knee
  • Return date: December 2023

Tyrell Malacia has missed the entirety of Man Utd's season so far and was absent during the club's pre-season. The left-back is one of many defenders missing at Old Trafford, leaving Ten Hag short of options across his backline.

Recent reports have suggested the Dutchman suffered a knee injury but United haven't disclosed the nature of his absence and he will likely be missing until the end of 2023.

Amad Diallo

  • Injury: Knee
  • Return date: November 2023

Amad Diallo has missed United's opening weeks of the new campaign after sustaining a knee injury in pre-season, missing out on the opportunity to impress Ten Hag after a stellar loan spell with Sunderland last term.

The Ivorian attacker offered a positive update on his fitness via Instagram, suggesting it will be "just a little longer before returning". However, Diallo is still expected to be missing until November at the earliest.

  • Injury: Foot
  • Return date: Late October or early November 2023

One of Man Utd's bright sparks in pre-season, Kobbie Mainoo has been unavailable for the Red Devils this season. Having suffered an injury in pre-season, the youngster is nearing a return to action and has returned to training in recent weeks.

However, a lack of match fitness and experience means Ten Hag may have to wait on him a little longer.
