Man Utd consider offering Juan Mata coaching role in summer

Manchester United are considering offering Juan Mata a coaching role when his contract expires at the end of the season.

Mata has been a bit-part player in the United squad in recent years, making just four appearances in all competitions this season. There is little chance of him being offered fresh terms too, as the Red Devils will be eager to get his hefty salary off the wage bill.

According to the Sun, there is interest from clubs in Italy and Spain but there could be another option on the table as well. It is understood that United are considering moving Mata into a technical role.

The former Chelsea man has already started his coaching badges and has also begun a management course. Mata has a reputation as an intelligent and conscientious man, which may suit him to a job away from the pitch.

He launched Common Goal several years ago, an initiative which encouraged footballers to donate 1% of their income to charitable causes.

There is expected to be plenty of off-field upheaval at Old Trafford at the end of the season. The club will need to find a permanent successor for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, with interim boss Ralf Rangnick set to move into an advisory role.

90min understands that Mauricio Pochettino and Erik ten Hag are the two frontrunners for the job at the moment. Whether Mata would fit into the new boss' backroom team remains to be seen.
